John Denver - Strum & Sing Ukulele

Far Out !
This book really contains what it says on the back cover: „The Strum & Sing series provides an unplugged and pared-down approach to your favorite songs — just the chords and the lyrics, with nothing fancy.“If you want a songbook that has the entire score for each song written down in a staff ledger or as TAB, you need to look somewhere else. This book has just the lyrics and the chords over it — chord diagrams are provided for every song. There are advantages to this: You can put plenty of songs into a book without making it as heavy as the phone book of a major city. Even with large, easy to read print, the book still has a convenient size, and you don’t have to turn pages while playing for most songs. The book contains songs from John Denver’s entire commercial career. Almost all songs from the Greatest Hits and Greatest Hits Vol 2. are in it, plus songs from the 80s and 90s.Most songs use just fairly easy chords that are manageable by players with 1-2 years of experience. Some songs require a certain proficiency in switching quickly between multiple chords. You should be able to play barre and half-barre chords and a few (but only a few) songs contain chords that require you to stretch over 4 frets.Needless to say that this book is made with players of standard ukuleles in mind: Soprano, concert, tenor. Someone here complained that the book has no chord diagrams for baritone ukulele, but the baritone ukulele is a different instrument. If you have a baritone ukulele, you can buy a book for guitar and ignore the two lowest strings on the diagrams. Or, if you are playing alone, you can play the same chords as for standard ukuleles. The tunes are the same, just lower-pitched.

This is my reward...
I'm a huge John Denver fan. I just bought a cute little pink ukelele. I'm trying to coax my somewhat aged brain and fingers to work together to make beautiful music! The John Denver book is my reward for when that happens!

music book was delivered quickly
If you need a music book with Standard Music Notation - this in NOT the book for you. It ONLY has lyrics and chords. So unless you already know the songs, you will not have the additional information needed to play these songs.

Great selection of John Denver songs
This is a great way to learn some John Denver music. I was surprised at the amount of songs in the book. I'm just learning to play and have several I'm working on. I do wish it had the notes to the songs as well as the chords just so they would've been easier to sing with the beat. I need all the help I can get.

This songbook contains both hits, and album cuts.
This ukulele songbook contains John Denver's hits, and album cuts. There are 44 songs, I haven't searched all of them on youtube. I've searched for 20 songs from the book on youtube and found them. Some songs I know, but couldn't remember the melody, that's where youtube is a big help. I Love this songbook!

No music
I was disappointed to find out that this book doesn’t have the music to go with the songs. Luckily I know most of them but it would have been nice for the ones I don’t know.

Not the best song book seen.
Although there are lots of songs, there are chords & words, no music notation. The keys that the songs are in are awkward for the Ukulele. It’s almost like they took the Guitar version of the songs and put in Ukulele chord diagrams.

Assumptions ??
PROS: Alphabetical Listing of Song Titles with easy-to-read lyrics and chord charts.CONS: The publisher (Cherry Lane Music Company) has "presumed" that the musician already knows the melodies to all of the songs. There is NO music notation of the melody line for those who can read music and want to learn the songs. (Nor is there ukulele tablature that could serve the same purpose.) One would have to consult another source or recording to learn the song melodies FIRST . . . which is a big drawback . . . but then, however, this book would be useful.Note: Conversely, the Hal Leonard music company - and its various subsidiaries - publish(es) songbooks which INCLUDE the melody lines as well as chords and tablature for those musicians wishing to learn to play and sing new songs.

Good Book For More Advanced Players
Good range of his songs, but definitely, in my opinion, not for beginners. Lots of fast chord and complicated chord changes - but then that's what makes his music special, I guess. Fortunately, I have Uke lessons and my tutor can transpose the music to suit my level and singing voice. For those Uke players who are more advanced, this is a good book.
