It’s One Jump Ahead of most Disney remakes...
This is the fifth live action Disney remake made in the 2010s and based on an animated classic. Whilst I found this “reimagining” entertaining, there have been stronger (and weaker) adaptations of Disney’s back catalogue.A lot of people hold the original 1992 version of Aladdin very close to their hearts. Who can blame them? It has some great songs and an incredible vocal performance from Robin Williams. This is also the problem - I feel that not much of this highly regarded Disney film actually meets up to what Williams gives us. Ask most fans and many will say that the Genie, not the titular character, not the villains and neither the princess are their favourite aspect of this film. Needless to say this remake was a gamble; especially with people dismissing Will Smith taking on the Genie. If Robin Williams was the cream on top with the original, then it is Naomi Scott’s Jasmine who is the scene stealer. Not only does she give the best performance in a live action Disney remake (just my opinion), her character is an improvement on the original. In this version, Jasmine doesn’t want to marry for love; she wants to succeed her father and lead their people with a new wave of confidence and strength. She has heartache from losing her mother and wants to do her proud. She’s got wits to make men feel dumb or catch them out. She has disgust for Jafar’s intentions and his remarks of “being seen, not heard”. To top it off, she’s finally gets her own song called ‘Speechless’. New songs often fall flat (cough, Beauty and the Beast 2017) and this one actually has reason to exist. It is a song that adds emotional depth to Jasmine, works rather well within the story and has an important and very relevant message to all the girls and women who watch the film - you have a voice, speak up and defy those who try to shun your thoughts and beliefs.Mena Massoud does a very good job in the titular role with capturing his charm, wit and desire to get closer to Jasmine. Indeed you can feel a believable chemistry between the princess and the street rat - this is helped by how Scott uses her eyes and Massoud’s input of nerves or coolness into his voice. There is more conflict with Aladdin wanting to keep up a lie in this one, making him more interesting and engaging than his animated counterpart. Will Smith’s Genie or The Fresh Prince of Agrabah is where the film flourishes or crashes depending on the viewer. It was wise to not replicate what Robin Williams did, however there are two factors that affect the final product - The CGI can be painful to watch and his humour will depend on how much you like Smith. That said, I found he was at his best when he sings and has those words of wise advice for Aladdin. Despite my mixed thoughts, his star power was likely the main reason why the film made over a billion dollars at the box office, so maybe I’m being too picky? Either way, there is more fun (or more drag) to whether you get on board with this new Genie.Sadly the new depiction of Jafar is lacking bite, power and threat in comparison to both Jonathan Freeman’s take in 1992 and other remakes of Disney animated classics (Idris Elba’s Shere Khan comes to mind). That said, Marwan Kenzari does have one or two decent moments of his impatience or inferiority issues.Guy Ritchie’s direction does help this film move along at a decent pace (even if it didn’t need to be pushing two hours in runtime). The frequent editing or slow motion moments may not bode well for some and at times, when you consider the source material, feels out of place. In conclusion, there are Disney animated remakes that are better made. There are also some that are appalling and feel like endurance tests (don’t worry, the cast can actually sing in this one!). With this new version, it is a mixed bag that delivers some strong elements with a nearing level of downers. I can easily watch this again solely for what Naomi Scott gives in her performance. Personally I’d rank the film 3.5 out of 5, so I’m going to give it 3 stars and you can either add one or deduct one depending on your feelings on the new Genie.
