Great design
This is a great chalk box. When you lift the crank from the housing, it automatically unlocks the line reel; after you’ve snapped your line and you’ve reeled the line back in, and you connect the crank back into its housing, it automatically locks the reel. Also, the reel-locking gear system is internal (inside the housing for the crank), so it’s less likely to get dirty and get chalk on it.

Works as well as my Japanese version.
This is a good value. The line leaves a crisp, well defined printing. Take care of it and it will serve you well.

I like the feel of the unit and the possibilities of this chalk box, but after a month of normal use, the winding arm has already broken off and ice already had to cut the string twice because knots definitely appear out of nowhere in the string, and a knot will not roll into the body of the chalk box when winding it back up. I wouldn’t say this is the best tool for a carpenter like myself that keeps his chalk box in his tool belt. Maybe it’ll work better for your wife while she’s out there working in her she shed or something?

Easy to fill.
Wish the description would tell one that it does not come with chalk. But ought with a bottle and easy fill large mouth opening when cap is removed. Much easier if chalk bottle has built in nozzle.

This thing is clunky and unusable
From package opening, this reel has been junk. Line does not come out smoothly, hard to reel in as well. The best use for this object has been obtained in the trash. Should have read the previous reviews and saved my money.

So far so good!
Works great so far. the string isn't too thick, and it's not so thin that it'll snap paired with high visibility chalk you're good to go.
