D.O. A. still lives!
I first saw this as a child when it came out and it made a big impression on me. I have since seen it many times. I always find it fascinating. I am a big fan of film noir, having seen hundreds of films and read many books. For me, this film is a one-off-- nothing else quite like it. (It is against my personal religion to even look at the re-make.)It is clearly one of the best examples of fatalism in film noir, fatalism being one of the classic characteristics of the genre/movement/style according to all the critics. Some of my other favorites that are especially fatalistic include Detour, Out of the Past, and, in a sense, Sunset Boulevard since the narrator in that film is not simply dying, like in DOA, but is already dead! What more could a noir fan ask for? Sunset Boulevard is not as dark or suspensful as DOA, but is widely recognized as a masterpiece. For reading I would especially recommend Noir City annuals, anything by Eddie Muller, Film Noir by William Luhr, Hardboiled America by Geoffrey O'Brien, The Big Book of Noir edited by Ed Gorman, et al. The last two may inspire you to start reading some of the literature on which many film noirs were based. I got started on reading noir lit by Roland the owner of the now-defunct Video Image video store in Berkeley, Ca. Eddie Muller (the Czar of Noir) once characterized Roland's store as the best! Roland used to recommend movies to me by saying, "You'll love this film, there isn't one nice person in it."Incidentally, my appreciation and understanding of noir and film in general has been greatly enhanced by listing to commentaries, especially (but not exclusively) those by Eddie Muller, James Ellroy (really incredible-- have to be heard to be believed), and Glenn Ericson. For lots of wonderful commentaries on great, even indispensable, films you need to buy Warner Film Noir Classics, Volumes 1, 2, and 3. Enjoy!

A masterpiece of non stop tension
O'Brien is in top form trying to find out who killed him and why. It is a race against time to get the answers before the slow acting poison finishes him off for good. All the supporting cast delivers. The cinematography is moody at times and almost surreal at other times. Great outdoor shots as he scurries about town in a race against time. The romantic sub plot is tender and heart wrenching. One of the great Noir flicks.

My aunt is in this movie
when he backs up to the magazine rack in San Francisco and then looks at the sun, then comes the ball, the little girl and her mother, right after that my aunt walks up and waving at someone, then you see her boyfriend/husband appear...they embrace a walk off. At the time, she was Leo Popkin's girlfriend.

Great movie
I first saw D. O. A. back in the early 70's when I was a pre-teen. We were on vacation and the weather was awful and we were stuck in a dingy hotel with limited tv service. My mother turned this movie on and I was hooked. I loved this movie back then and I still love it today. It kept my interest throughout the whole movie trying to guess who dunnit.

Worth a watch......Some of the Cheesiness was just plain entertaining....
The premise is good..A living murdered man...in fact...with stronger actors this could have been a lot better film...the acting is B grade...that being said...it wasn't too bad. Not quite sure who scored the film with the special sound effects, as everytime a seemingly beautiful woman would walk by the main actor.... a loud slide whistle would blast out to the viewer. Once was weird enough..the third time was annoying...don't let that distract you....the marginal acting is part of the charm and it does not impact the overall story...

From someone who gets film noir
The remastering of this film erased the depth and contrast of the classic film noir look. The film was rendered flat, and without the black-white-grey contrast so beautifully captured in this genre. The shadows were completely lost. I own 3 versions of D.O.A. One where the picture is great, but the audio sucks, one where the audio is great, but the picture is grainy. This one looks like an early black and white t.v. program. But, please don't stop searching for any great "remastered" film noir, because I won't stop either! Hopefully, our twelve-year-old-technological-geniuses will discover a way to preserve the film noir films that will awe us oldsters!

Great Film Noir
Great film noir. I have watched this movie at least a dozen times. I probably will watch it another dozen times in the coming years. Thanks to Amazon for having it on their instant video. I wish they had more film noir titles.

Interesting premise
The set up is intriguing: a man appears at a police station to report he has been murdered. He discovered he was poisoned with a lethal toxin and has a short time to live. The story is told in a flashback. It reveals the man's search to uncover the reason he was targeted.

EXCELLENT FILM - POOR PICTURE QUALITY
I WOULD HAVE GIVEN THIS FILM 5 STARS BUT FOR THE DISAPPOINTING PICTURE QUALITY. HAVING SEEN IT BEFORE ON THE TV I SEEM TO REMEMBER IT BEING MUCH SHARPER. NEVERTHELESS, THIS IS A GREAT STORY - VERY UNUSUAL AND GRIPPING RIGHT TO THE END. THE FILM GOES AT A BREATHTAKING PACE AND EDMUND O'BRIEN PLAYS A GREAT PART. FOR ME HE IS A VERY UNDER-RATED ACTOR AND HE HAS BEEN SUPERB IN ALL THE FILMS I HAVE SEEN HIM IN.
