Brian Greene's popular documentaries "The Elegant Universe" and "The Fabric of the Cosmos" together on one DVD.The Elegant Universe: Physicist Brian Greene's bestselling book comes to the small screen in this stimulating look at a complicated topic: the search for order in the universe. Is a revolutionary proposal-"string theory"-the answer scientists have been seeking for centuries? Greene tackles the mind-boggling complexity of the theory with vivid, clear images, and calmly points the way to the answer. Fabric of the Cosmos: The Fabric of the Cosmos, based on the book by physicist and author Brian Greene, takes us to the frontiers of physics to see how scientists are piecing together the most complete picture yet of space, time and the universe. With each step, audiences will discover that just beneath the surface of our everyday experience lies a world we'd hardly recognize, a startling world far stranger and more wondrous than anyone expected. Review: Great doc! - A great science doc about the Theory of Everything! Well done. Review: Professor of Theoretical Physics at Columbia University and a researcher of super string theory (http - Brian Green, Professor of Theoretical Physics at Columbia University and a researcher of super string theory (http://physics.columbia.edu/people/profile/406 ) is a very good choice for host of “Space, Time & The Universe With Brian Greene”. His explanations of string theory, it’s potential unification of physics, possible applicability to the extremes of the earliest Big Bang moments, impact on gravitational theory and more are clear and understandable. Mr. Green sticks to the realm of popular science enhancing comprehension for those of us who struggled for a C in college physics. He makes an enjoyable case for the impact of string theory on “Space, Time & the Universe”. The DVD begins with Einstein’s dream of a unified theory and logically progresses to the premise of multiple universes. Intervening are explanations of string theory, the need for more then 3 dimensions, the impact of string theory on space and time, and the discrete nature of gravity. Each subject is largely speculative, but vastly entertaining and informative. Anyone who enjoys science will find the programs on the DVD fascinating. For those who find the presentation shallow I suggest that it is just right for the intended audience. A predilection for the support of advanced mathematics can be satisfied in a university setting.

Teenager found love of astrophysics & bettered grades in school!
Absolutely love this series. My teenage godson found a love for astrophysics in this series which pushed him to investigate more & work harder in school. This series helped instill a love of science & HELPED BETTER HIS GRADES!

These can change your views of the universe
I bought this two volume set as a gift. I have enjoyed the two separate dvds for several years and have watched them at least 15 times. I have learned so much about the universe and have begun to understand some of its major underlying principles. The explanations and the graphics are incredible. The universe is incredible.

Pretty Good
Very Good, however a bit slow and repetitive (i.e. frequently repeating 2 or 3 minute clips in subsequent parts of the series).

From physics to speculation
This DVD set brings together two series from the science program NOVA, narrated by physicist Brian Greene. Of the two, the better one is The Fabric of the Cosmos, which deals with issues such as space, time and quantum theory. Unfortunately, Greene tends to move seamlessly from well-established ideas supported by rigorous empirical evidence to wildly speculative hypotheses, which remain at best unproven. To a viewer unfamiliar with physics, it would be difficult to distinguish between the science and the speculation. This drawback is even more serious in The Elegant Universe, which considers string theory, and its successor, M theory. Both theories are exercises in pure mathematics, with no empirical support. Although Greene acknowledges the lack of evidence at several stages, he presents the theories in a very favorable light. This favorable picture may be unwarranted. There have been some powerful critiques of string theory, notably the book Not Even Wrong by Peter Woit. Even physicists who admire the mathematics have agreed that the theory may be disconfirmed as new evidence is discovered.

Great Introduction (or review) of Physics, particularly Relativity.
This is a fun review of Physics for me. Sadly, there was no real review of the mathematics behind the physics, which is too bad. but probably most people don't want to watch mathematical derivations when watching a dvd. Anyway, it's a great review, or if you are new to physics, this will be fun to watch.

Good book
This guy really knows how to explain things in a way that you don't have to be eye balls deep in the subject yourself to get it. I have several of his books and have enjoyed every one of them. I'm a retired EE so I have some knowledge about how things work just not in the physics of the universe as much as I would like. All things engineering and physics interest me and Mr. Greene explains it well.

Thanks for coordinating so many "difficult" fields of modern physics - but theory of entanglement is really mindboggling. The presentation is excellent with some comparably tangible and comprehensible examples even though the theoretical work is complicated yet fascinating and even scary. Epistemologically challenging - so was much of quantum theory and relativity theory. But we are learning to trust mathematics even with probability theory at our heels. Thanks so much for the fabulous journeys to strings, hyperspace (Calabi Yau), inflation. problematic entanglement, ... well described narratively and with manageable examples. Looking forward to another exciting dvd devoted to Brian Greene's THE HIDDEN REALITY - Leonard Susskind. Michio Kaku and Lisa Randall ... supplementing the great series of dvds from THE TEACHING COMPANY.

There are four discs to this pack. One pair is one region, and the other a different region, which means with such 'inconsistency' of format that it has been wrongly filled. Very disappointing for anyone purchasing it in the hope of seeing Brian Greens otherwise delightful work on the subject. This item should be withdrawn from sale to avoid disappointments on a wide scale. T. Williams.

This DVD is interesting in that it is a documentary about the current thoughts about Space & Time. The Documentary is narrated by Brian Greene, and it is very interesting in the way that it covers this topic.
