Just OK
This book is often recommended when one is researching the series "Downton Abbey". However, I found it to be very dry and also very redundant, as the estates suffered the same trials, one after the other, and the aristocrats committed the same errors of indiscretion and over-indulgence. Although the names changed in the various chapters, I felt as though I were reading the same information over and over. The main threads--before the Great War, the Great War (WW1), post-war, and the 1920s with service in the great houses, wealthy American brides, the rise of the middle class, women's rights, and industrialization were all covered in "Downton Abbey" so I did not gain much knowledge with this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed readily this book. She wrote a wonderfully researched her subject and was able to describe so perfectly the young people and the times they lived in. Many of these young adults, especially the men, went through the horrors of the Great War and this was their over-reaction to it. h
I definitely recommend this book, especially if you're interested in the post-war era of 1919-1929, the antics of "the bright young things" and the large gap between the upper class and working-class "society.Brilliant, indeed

As a person who is interested in British aristocracy, I found this book to be very interesting, well written in Farmington. It was a great ride!

Three Stars
Interesting and beautiful but ultimately tedious and repetitious

Major snooze.
I was really hoping this would be more interesting. Instead I could barely keep my eyes open reading each long winded chapter.

Not My Cup of Tea
Very dense, not to my liking. I couldn't get through it (mostly for lack of interest).

that reads more like a school essay than a piece of scholarship
Wow - this really is a lightweight piece, that reads more like a school essay than a piece of scholarship. Historians should definitely avoid. Would not be of interest to anyone who knows anything about the subject - only to complete newbees in this field - and then they could really do better elsewhere. Shockingly reliant on just a handful of autobiographies. Don't make my mistake if you are interested in the subject and have read anything else.

Boring as could be!!
Repetitive, not a very interesting book and a lightweight read. No "meat on the bones". Over quoted from news cuttings throughout!
