Just what I was looking for
Looks and feels like a solid, high-quality tool. My only gripe is the smooth handle. I really don't understand the industry trend to smooth, shiny tools. They are hard to grip when your hands are clean. Get a little oil or grease on them and it's even worse. This one does have a couple of knurled rings, which is better than most nowadays, but I wish the grip area was fully knurled. The long handle gives extra leverage, and the 45 tooth gearing supports more torque. You do have to swing the handle a little further (8 degrees vs 5 degrees between clicks) but I have a fine tooth shorty ratchet for use in tight spaces. This tougher long handle unit makes a nice counterpart to my other one and is an excellent addition to my tool box. In spite of its long handle and lower tooth gearing, it does have a narrow head and will fit into tight places. As long as you have a little extra room to swing the handle it should work great when space is limited. If you are looking for a ratchet that has a little extra oomph for stubborn nuts and bolts, and has some knurling on the handle for extra grip, this one should be on your short list.

High leverage and durable. Perfect for the industrial Professional. USA made
This isn't a Snap On F80. It isn't similar to it, and if you're all about fine teeth, this ratchet may not be for you. I want to start with the brand, I own a lot of proto tools and I have yet to be disappointed! At 45 teeth, this ratchet has a smooth robust mechanism, and it has about 8 to 12 degrees of arc swing. I am an industrial electrician, a low arc swing is not a necessity, what does is durability. Having broken my helpers Stanley 72 tooth pear head (closest thing to me) I wanted to go for something a little more industrial stength than the typical Husky, Stanley or Craftsman. I came across this Ratchet, researched it for weeks and it went in sale for 29.97 usd plus shipping. Worked out perfectly, and another big seller is it's LENGTH. At 11 3/4 or so inches, this tool provides leverage and lots of it! With a coarser mechanism, the tool's fail rate substantially decreases. It is very thin as far as thickness goes, "low profile". It is comfortable, and can be used all day. It gets a little slippery when oily.I highly recommend this product to the industrial professional. A car mechanic would probably not have this as their first choice.

Superb construction
Just received today, and upon first inspection it's a very well constructed ratchet. I was surprised at how smooth the ratcheting mechanism is, and very well balanced in the hand. Will be used for general farm equipment and vehicle repairs/maintenance at home. As we're far from a Sears (about 100 miles), Craftsman was out of the question for bring-it-in-for-warranty-exchange trips. Not that a Proto distributor is any closer, but I'd like to reduce the frequency of warranty return trips by upping the quality.I have quite a collection of Craftsman tools at work (engineering laboratory), and much experience with them through my brief 28 year existence and have noticed quality decline in the past 5-10 years. Stripping out screwdrivers has been my specialty lately, and I consider myself one to not abuse tools outside of their intended use. So I'm in the market for something USA made and a notch or two above that, but don't want to break the bank with the big truck brands. Proto fits this bill well, at least with their ratchets and drive tools.

This is a very beautiful and tough tool
This is a very beautiful and tough tool. I have one of these in all 3 sizes (1/4, 3/8, & 1/2) and noticed that the ratcheting mechenism is not always perfect (especially in the 3/8 sizes). Sometimes when loosening bolts very quickly, the teeth on the ratchet make a little "pop" as they are meshing into place. I tried super lube (sparingly), but it did not help the problem. I think it is simply a function of the way these ratchets are designed. Too bad for this little flaw, otherwise this series of ratchet would (in my opinion) be the best money can buy.

Bulky
Not the quality I would expect from Proto.

Proto Pear Shaped Low Profile
I have used cheap ratchets for a long time. The latest one I was using blew up in my hand trying to crack a caliper mounting bolt. I received this in the mail today; put it to the test and it worked like a charm. 11 inches provides nice leverage and the slim profile on this fits nicely in cramped areas working on a vehicle.

Excellent Ratchet
I've used this tool daily for the last couple weeks. I consider this to be one of my best ratchets. Very smooth operation, strong ratcheting system and great ergonomics. It has everything I want from a ratchet.
