What to know about the Klu Klux Klan
Well written. Full of information. I did not know the Klan was strong and died out. Then came back stronger. I thought it survived from the early days.

Very interesting and informative read!!
Good info. First time I read this book noticed a part about the town I spent my middle and senior high years living in. It was such that when a granddaughter talked to my sister (who had read the book) about a History paper and was told about this certain incident from the book, she later said the teacher had never heard the story and therefore, was not true. Well---anyway, this is quite an interesting read. Arrived in time. Thanks.

The Ku Klux Klan may not be a pleasant topic ...
The Ku Klux Klan may not be a pleasant topic. In fact, the KKK is a black eye the United States of America is slowly healing from. I picked up this book because I wanted to learn more about the dark history of the KKK. This book is a read that can enlighten readers, or history buffs about the history of the KKK. Also, this book gives people an idea of what makes the KKK tick, and shows the efforts of the KKK throughout American history to cover up their true intentions, racist terror. This book explores the KKK's birth after the Civil War, the rebirth of the KKK in 1915, the rise and fall of the KKK in the 1920s, etc. The book then covers the KKK's sporatic growth through the rest of the 20th century, all the way up the present day where people now know ways to combat the KKK and the terror they bring. If you are interested in any part of American history read this book. Just because a topic is not pleasant doesn't mean it should be ignored.

The Best Book on the History of the KKK
I set my novel, THE BAD BEHAVIOR OF BELLE CANTRELL, in 1920 the year the Klu Klux Klan sent salesmen across the South to sign up members. First they'd go to a church and give the minister a membership, if he accepted it (the Episcopal ministers didn't) they could count on other members of the congregation signing up. Memberships cost $10. The salesman kept $5, he sent the rest to the regional office, but the majority went to the home office in Atlanta, where the Klansmen bought their costumes. And the Klan wasn't just a white supremacist organization, they were equal opportunity haters. I did a lot of research on the Klan to write BAD BEHAVIOR, but by far the best and most readable book was THE FIERY CROSS.

The KKK intimidated any person (man or woman, white or black) who worked for voting rights.
I checked out from library. Truths that I learned from this book:The Ku Klux Klan was originally formed as a secret gentleman's club. The KKK did not defend anyone. The KKK intimidated any person (man or woman, white or black, freeborn or slave born) who worked for the education of, voting rights, or social equality of blacks with whites. They also attacked union organizers in the 20th century. What is most shocking is how powerfully "Birth of a Nation" move was in persuading people of the opposite of these truths. We should all ask ourselves when we see a movie to ask whether this matches with what is good and noble and true. The other shocking thing is that what was portrayed in these movies matched what was written in most history books of the time. One of the history books was written by the President, Woodrow Wilson. So, to him the movie seemed ‘true’. It was surprising to learn how the KKK also attacked whites of the Freedman's Bureau because they tried to educate blacks.

The Kluxing of America
In this book Wyn Wade has given us a very good overview but not an extremely detailed look at the Ku Klux Klan. That is not to say that he has not done his research for he has found lots of material. The simple fact is that a book of this length cannot possibly cover the subject in any great depth. That would require a book at least twice this long, and probably three times as long. This book was obviously not intended to be a Shelby Foote type narrative of the Klan, but the basic survey that it is.Wade has done a good job with the post reconstruction Klan, but he tends to take revisionist history a bit too far. One thing that puzzles me is that he refers to Tennessee as the, "the only border state" that left the Union. Many historians refer to the Volunteer State as a border state even though it was surrounded by slave states on all sides, so I can let that part of the statement slide. I have never however heard of Tennessee referred to as a border state without at least Virginia and Arkansas also receiving that label. It's not a big thing I realize, but it did bug me.After reconstruction, Wade takes the reader to the history of D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation", the movie that made the rebirth and rise of the post World War I Klan possible. Then he traces the new Klan through its phenomenal growth to its demise. Wade then moves on to the Cold War anti-Communist Klan, the Civil Rights era Klan, the David Duke Klan, and today's Aryan crowd. He does a fine job of bringing out the personalities of various Klan leaders and giving the lowdown on various politicians who, while not Klansmen themselves, were more than happy to court Klan support. He also does an outstanding job of telling the story of Klan violence, with special attention to the victims.Wade ends this fascinating book with the story of the groups that have been organized to oppose the Klan and the FBI campaign that brought the Klan to its knees. Finally, Wade warns the reader that the Klan is still out there and should never be pronounced dead. The Klan has proven its resilience again and again he warns and his excellent book will give the reader many reasons to be wary of the men behind the masks.
