The Daytrippers (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

This is a fantastic gem. A great script and wonderful performances by all, especially Anne Meara, and Stanley Tucci. It really gives you the feel of New York in the mid 90s. I would recommend this film to anyone who wants to explore more independent cinema.

This is a questionable addition to the Criterion Collection. While watchable, somewhat entertaining, and filled with quirky characters, i have issues with the entire premise of the film.Major spoilers below:The plot is fairly simple: the main character suspects that her husband may be cheating on her, so she and her extended family pile into the station wagon for a day trip to confront him, with many quirky episodes along the way.However, the ultimate reveal is one that's, over the years, turned into a cheap and in many ways insulting climax: her husband is indeed cheating on her - not with a woman, but with a man.I suppose when the film was released this ending may have been considered quite a shocker, but it's a device that I've grown tired of and find to be prejudiced at best and blatantly homophobic at worst. One could counter this statement by pointing out that the other characters do not appear to pass judgement on the husband for his sexual orientation - and i suppose that's true, but the fact is they also seem to give him a free pass for cheating because of this. It's an odd and conflicting message to send to the audience. While tolerance of homosexuality may have been the underlying intent of the film - a message i fully support - the means used are ultimately patronizing. The days of using a gay reveal as a punchline are long gone. We can promote the message of tolerance in better ways. As a society, let's grow up and move on.

Watching this film was a very enjoyable experience. Also liked the bonus features. The acting and direction are first rate. Anne Meara is adorable.
