We've been using these since our daughter was born, at 7 pounds. They looked comically big on her then, but fit fine nevertheless. She's 3 months and 13.5 pounds now and they still fit her fine. I guess it depends on the baby and the size of his/her neck, but in our case - with a rather average-sized baby - they've been great from the start, and I hope we can continue using them for months to come!

Do they prevent spit up from soaking through?

It is about 10in with velcro not overlapped completely They work well, but I wish they were a little bigger around the neck.

What is the "waterproof inner layer" made of?

Ya know, I'm not exactly sure?!? But I do know that it works. I ended up buying another pack of boys & 2 packs of girls. Half @ home & half @ daycare :)
