Waterproof leather shoe

Real hiking, nearly stealth, excellent quality. Make sure you actually WANT a real hiking shoe.
It's sad that the world considers 4 stars a negative review, that's not my intent. Anyway, this is for size 10.5 wide mens, black color. My original review followed by two updates is as follows and after the second, I upped the scoring to 5 stars.pros:-The soul is the real deal. Vibram (YAY!), stiff, deeply grooved, you will not slip and you won't complain about walks off of pavement. Vibram simply doesn't wear much. I drag my feet more than I should but Vibram will prevent the shoe from dieing due to the heel wearing through. Amazing product.-From the top they look fairly typical. Merrell seems to sell these shoes with more hiking looking shoelace eyelets but this is the one you want to wear to work. I would note that the grey on the lower sides does stand out a little more than I'd like (why must everything have so much flash?) but it's not too terrible.-Padding is very hiking boot like. This is not a flat shoe and that was great to see. This is much more a hiking shoe in disguise than a casual shoe with fancy rubber on the bottom. Your heel will be higher than your toes and you will have padding trying to level out your foot like a proper hiking boot (imagine walking in sand. The parts where your foot makes the deepest groves are where the strongest padding is.-The wide size worked great for me. Nice wide toe box. Not afraid to look bulbous in order to fit your foot correctly.Cons:-Price! I was willing to pay for quality but I am a little disappointed in the price. This is just my emotional response. I could not find better or equivalent for less-The shoe looks a little sneaker-ish from the side. Looks like a disguised basketball shoe with it's lighter colored side plastic attached to the soul. Not too terrible but you're not going to wear these shoes with dress pants and get away with it. Works well for Jeans though I think for those growing number of places that consider nice jeans totally fine for business casual.-I can't quite get into the back of the shoe. Not sure if this is a break-in issue but my foot is too far forward in the shoe. The padding under the heel is especially sloped. I feel like I will appreciate this more once it's broken in but I think this is the source of some of the negative reviews suggesting the shoe is padded backwards or oddly. Make sure you tie the shoe with a lot of weight down and your foot all the way back, especially before they're broken inI don't like the shoelaces but I say that about every shoe. I've had laces (leather ones?) that don't loosen. I feel like these have excellent friction, just not much give. They look fine though, not "hiking laces" with some kind of gaudy plad like you'll find on 90% of Merrells and every other similar shoe.Update after 6 months:I've worn these for pretty much every day for 6 months and I have the following two updates.Pro: The "can't get into the back of the shoe" problem is completely resolved. I think this is just part of the deal with a "real" hiking shoe. It will take a dozen miles or so to break in and then your foot will appreciate the back of the shoe holding up for the duration.Con: The shoelaces are indeed garbage. I got some "sport" kiwi laces that were black after the originals started to dissolve into nothing and it was a huge upgrade. Why do such expensive shoes have junky laces? I don't know but they're easy enough to replace.Annoyance: one of the shoes squeaks on totally flat surfaces (like every step in an office building). I don't know what causes squeaks and I don't know if it's fixable but it is annoying. I've learned to just tune it out. Perhaps this is the price for wearing an outdoor tread pattern in an office environment so much.Update after 20 months:I can't believe I'm writing about a shoe I still nearly every day after 20 months! Like I said above, I drag my feet a good bit and usually the heel would wear through long before this many miles but the Vibram, though showing a little wear, is still holding on after all this time! I'm about to kill my replacement laces but I still think they were much better than the factory ones. I've also worn lose the fabric above the heel, probably from my laziness of not unlacing the shoe before taking them off. Because of my cutting up of the rear fabric and just general scuffs and aging after 20 months, I am considering buying a replacement par.Still the best fitting shoe I've ever owned and Vibram is such a wonderful feature. I'm raising my scoring to 5 stars.

Stiff Like Boots
Well, I bought these when they were on sale. My brother has several pair of Merrell shoes and boots. He is always raving about how perfect they are and how they last forever and how comfortable they are. I needed a pair of black walking/sneaker/tennis shoes to replace an older pair of Sketchers. When I saw these on sale I figured, why not give them a try. I was not impressed. I came very close to sending them back, but decided to keep them instead. They are definitely not a replacement for what I needed. The Sketchers are so much more comfortable. These actually feel like I'm wearing my climbing boots. The soles are so hard and stiff with very little flex. I think they make me about an inch and a half taller. Definitely taller soles than walking shoes. Great arch support too. Probably the best I've found for my high arch. They seem to get too warm for my feet, so they will probably be good for winter. The shoes are very well made and will likely last forever, because it will be a rare case that I'll actually wear them. I guess I found out what "Hiking Shoes" are. They do look good though.

Poorly Manufactured Failure
Of course mileage will vary, but this particular shoe lasted just two weeks under light use before the toe molding began to separate...This is the second pair of Merrells within the last two years and I thought maybe my last pair was a fluke but it separated the seam. I guess I’m a sucker because I bought them again knowing they are comfortable and waterproof when there are no gaping holes in them from manufacturing defects. Perfect shoe for someone who only wears it less than 48 hours a year I guess. Buyer beware of poor manufacturing they will rip at a seam or separate !

Planeed obsolecense at its worst. Pool quality. Don't buy!
Update May 2020: after a light use for just a couple of months the fabric inside started already wearing out! This is unacceptable !!!!!Where are the times where expensive and branded shoes would last for a couple of years I am asking? Now shoes don't even last one season? Season in which I am mostly staying at home !!!Original review Oct 2019:Great quality, comfortable and pretty warm despite being quite light. The only downside is that they are slippery on wet and smooth surfaces more than other shoes.

These are NOT waterproof nor even dampproof! The heel padding is a bit suspect as well.
I bought these to walk my 3 Golden Retriever dogs, who love to wander everywhere, especially where its muddy & wet. I cannot wear normal hiking boots which cover my ankle, as I have a problem with a protruding bone, so I am limited to hiking shoes which have a deep dip under the ankle. According to the sales blurb these shoes seemed to fit my needs and I found them comfortable to wear right from the off. However although I have had them for a few weeks I have only used them a once or twice, but recently I have taken them into regular use, as my old walking shoes finally gave up the ghost.I am very disappointed in two ways. Firstly the heel padding collapses into the base of the back of the shoe if you do not hold the top of the heel padding its 'normal' position before putting your foot in, which is a bit annoying if you are wearing thick socks or two thinner pairs. It may be my lifelong habit of not releasing more of the laces, but all my other shoes I have bought, have never given way like these do.The most disappointing thing is the blurb says that they are waterproof, and indeed there is a tag displayed loud and proud on the heel seam that they are waterproof. - They are not in any way not even damp proof!I have just returned from a walk with the dogs, where I walked through some long grass, which was wet from recent rainfall. I was shocked and dismayed that within seconds of walking in the grass, I could feel my feet getting wet, the feeling getting worse with every passing minute.Without walking in any puddles or standing water just the wet grass, I returned home with feet so wet I had to ring out my socks , something I have never had to do before with other less known brands of shoes. I might have well been wearing sandals for all the weather protection these shoes offered.I bought Merrell as a known good brand in walking circles, but they have failed miserably. The Vibram sole however lived up to its reputation of good grip and impact absorbing quality, shame they are attached to such poor quality uppers!

The most comfortable shoes I've worn
With my previous Merrell Intercept shoes, which had lasted me a number of years and had been heavily abused/worn down, I was so impressed with how sturdy/comfortable they were that I decided to trust the brand and get a new pair of Merrell shoes.I am extremely glad I did - I've only worn them for a day but they are so, so comfortable and built like miniature tanks. I'm sure they will last me as long if not longer than the others and I am now pretty much a Merell fanboy! Time will tell though.Like my previous shoes, I'll be wearing these every day other than for work as I find these shoes give the best all-round performance for every day life. The brown also goes well with pretty much any casual wear so I don't have to worry about that either!I really recommend these, it's clear that these are top quality shoes and built to last.

Merrell sizing inconsistent.
I already have this model shoe in size 9 from two years ago and I have been delighted. But one of the insoles wore out and, annoyingly, Merrell UK do not supply replacements although they do in the US. So I decided to buy a new pair of shoes - same model same size. Now I always take size 8 in other brands of shoes but when I bought my first pair I sized up to a 9 in accordance with the general advice in reviews. Perfect! I have loved them. But this new pair in size 9 for some reason must be subtly different because they are tight in the toe box. So, back they go. Merrell really need to sort their sizing out.

Comfortable walking shoes
COMFORTWide fit which was what I was looking for. Great for short/medium walks.WATERPROOFINGLeather always offers better waterproofing & these shoes have been good at keeping the water out. Treat with Dubbin on a regular basis & they should lastBUILD QUALITYSeem to be lasting well. Had them 1 1/2 years with minimal wear & tear damage. I like the finish, but they were a bit darker than I had expected.
