Harry Nilsson's classic cartoon adventure
Harry Nilsson's classic cartoon adventure holds up incredibly well. The film's message was inclusive (before anyone ever used that descriptive phrase) and it's presented in gentle, musical terms. You don't have to be a big Nilsson fan to get into this one, and it's a great animated film to share with younger family members. If memory serves, Dustin Hoffman did the original narration; in this version it's down to Nilsson's buddy Ringo Starr, who does a lovely job of it. Recommended as nostalgia and as fine family fun.

Old story stands the test of time.
I first saw this video as kid in elementary school. I always remembered loving the message and the music. I had wanted to see it again but could never find it. I just happened to search again and was pleasantly surprised to find it released in DVD format so I purchased it right away. When I got this video recently I had my four children watch it with me. Of course they wanted to be watching something else or playing video games or texting, but I kind of made them sit and watch it with me. I felt just like the dad character that Ringo portrays in this video. He wants to read his son a story but his son would rather be watching his "program" on TV. In the end the child likes the story and I like to think that my kids liked it as well. There are many scenes where the animation is set to the music of Harry Nilsson and at times it almost seems like an animated musical. I am certain you will be singing the song "Me and my Arrow" for days after watching this video. The animation is dated for sure but to me that just makes it a classic. The storylines are timeless and still hold true today. Conformity and uniformity aren't all they are cracked up to be and its ok to be a little different. In fact if everyone is the same its kind of boring."You don't have to have a point to have a point."I loved watching this old animated feature again and appreciated it as well as sharing its message with my children.

The Point
The Point is a timless story about overcoming discrimination and learning how to deal with the obstacles thrown at us by life. Bullies really have no idea of what it's like to just be a non-aggressive, normal (though different looking or thinking) individual. The class structure that is presented in The Point clearly defines much of what is taking place in America today - rich and poor, conformity or rejection. And, like Oblio, sometimes being banished is not such a band thing to have happen to you. After having seen The Point (twice I think) during the very early 70's I continued to remember the message from this great little film. Now, 24 years later and having searched for some time, I am adding the film to my library to share not only with my daughter, but also with the managers working at my corporation. There is a lot to be learned from The Point - most notably is to avoid a situation that many of us find ourselves in too frequently and learning that "A point in too many directions is like having no point at all!"Great film, great message!Though this not a critical review of the film, it is more of an endorsement that the film will make most people better people with greater understanding and to that I simply say - Enjoy!

Teach your children lessons about fairness and racism in a kid-friendly and fun manner
The Story:"The Point" is a great animated film. I grew up watching "The Point" because my parents taped the movie from TV sometime when it aired. A round-headed boy grows up to the age of ten and is then exiled from his hometown of pointed-headed people because he looks different from them. He and his dog wander through a forest and come upon different characters living there, each with a lesson of some kind to impart on the boy. I won't give away the ending, but you will smile. The Music:Throughout the story, songs from Harry Nilsson are played and, like an animated music video, you get lost in the songs. The songs do not have much to do with the story as it progresses, but they are not childen's songs. Rather, Harry Nilsson's songs are warm and easy to sing for adult and child. As a child, I sang them all the time. The Animation:The animation and character design are really interesting. No anime or CGI here. It looks to be hand-painted and definitely a product of great imagination.Recommendation:"The Point" is a great film and songbook that you can use teach your children about the problems and unfairness of race and discrimination without images of violence. I also recommend "The Point" to any fan of Harry Nilsson or Ringo Star (who narrates the film).

Great character film with good issues for discussion
The movie is very fun for kids and adults - the music is catchy - Oblio is endearing and we do care for his honesty and smarts - the artwork is fantastic and often wierdly abstract. The characters Oblio meets all point his thoughts towards the truth he is struggling towards. Ok, so Ringo may not have been the best narrator - he sounds like he is just reading along and often emphasizes the wrong parts of speech. More annoying is that this digital transfer seems to have been done from a flawed master - there are lots of "dusty" blemishes that could easily have been brushed out before committing it to DVD. There are no extras at all either - kinda short-changing the millions of people who love this movie.Having said that, it really is a classic and it will cheer up everyone who watches it. It is a funny, thought-provoking, tale of a boy's mission and it makes its many "points" in a gentle and creative way. Kids will relate to Oblio and he will help them think about the law, crime and punishment, bullying, discrimination, ethics, character, growing up, caring for nature, purpose in life, danger and fear, and making a stand. They can wonder and wander along with Oblio through this magical treat which is a feast for the the mind, the heart, the ears, and the eyes.

Right to the Point
As with other reviews I think this is a great coming together of beautiful music, witty words and of course some excellent animation.Despite first being aired on BBC2 back on Boxing Day 1970 (grey cells may have let me down but I am pretty sure it was then) this stands that test of time.Harrys playful songs fit well with some of the more serious lyrics and he uses his superb voice to tremendous effect to both. In the original he narrated it himself, although I think in this DVD Ringo has the pleasure. The film has two levels - a fun cartoon with jolly music, and a serious message which is still relevant (and needed ?) today. It is about time the BBC dusted it off, paid the royalities to his estate and let more people enjoy what was a unique talent.Poly high

Delightful!!
Yes I saw it years ago at Christmas (1971) and I'm so glad its finally available. One gripe though....Wheres Dustin Hoffman's commentary.... or even Harry's??And calling it stereo or for that matter Dolby Digital 5.1 is a real cheek. My home AV does it better on its own under 'Rock' or whatever. I could have done better with the Stereo soundtrack, some sound effects from the BBC Cd collection and Pro Tools in an afternoon. Shoddy presentation, it deserves much much better.(He's got a point there) sic

A gem
This will be a very short review, because the point is... well, "The Point" is... it's one of those rare things that I feel is so perfectly and uniquely self-contained and wonderful that any attempt to describe it would harm it in some way. It just has to be watched.I know that's a bit Zen, but that's how this film makes me feel. I love it! I wish it were on Region 2...
