David Crosby: Remember My Name [DVD]

Moving look back
I did not like Cameron Crowe's question about how "when you saw your dead lover's body, someone said that changed you forever", I mean, how goulish. Mr. Crowe, you should be so lucky as to never be in that position. Otherwise, this is a very moving look back at a fantastic career and the terribly high cost of becoming a drug addict, but Croz is still the man.

If you are a fan of David Crosby, you or Crosby stills Nash this is a must
I love this documentary. He is an amazing man who is actually very very sick. I don’t know how much longer will have him around. We saw him in concert with Graham Nash back in 2014. It was wonderful. I doubt I’ll see him again but I keep looking.

One of the worst human beings in the biz
I have been a fan of CSN&Y since the 60's, together, in their other bands and their separate careers. I like some of Crosby's old music a lot. That being said, you gotta separate the art from the artist as a human being. Otherwise we wouldn't like very much music, movies, whatever. I thought he was an obnoxious D-bag before, but after watching this, I think he's worse. And since I watched it, it has only gotten worse between him and his old mates. Here is a guy of some talent, a rich kid juvenile delinquent who had a silver spoon up his a*s from jump. He glommed onto some mega-talents (especially Stills) and had a stellar career that most people could only dream of, then blows it all for dope. So he cleans up somewhat, not so much choice by that point, it was either that or die, gets a new liver, and goes back to being an egotistical A-hole. Everybody he has worked with hates his guts and he seems proud of that fact. The only people that will work with him now are kids who weren't even born when he last changed his guitar strings. You can be a success and still be a loser. He's proof of that. Worth a watch for the story, music, and train wreck aspect.

David is Narcissist, but this was still a good watch
Well-produced, interesting back stories, especially if you came of age before or during the Laurel Canyon days and loved David since the Byrds and CSN.

Wonderful tragic tale
Despite the overarching theme of a life spent being a problematic personality with a great talent to offend and alienate people, I was enjoyed seeing this documentary. Crosby was a pivotal figure involved in the creation of exceptional music and he was part of the Los Angeles constellation of musicians that defined this key era in American popular music. One scene that moved me was Crosby standing outside the house that Joni Mitchell lived in during her "Ladies of the Canyon" period. Photos of the house's windows have appeared variously over the years, so seeing that side of the green house made it recognizable.By the end of the film I was left with several questions... the primary one being why did David Crosby persist in his horrible behavior? So horrible that his former CSNY colleagues refuse to talk to him.

Crosby on the Life of Crosby
Brilliant. Incredible. Brutally honest, but hopeful. Hopeful in that Crosby is still making music, some of it his best in years. Decades, really. Certainly stronger releases than the rest of S, N & Y from the same time span. His life with wife Jan is both inspiring and heart-rending. Her comments before the camera will bring a tear to your eyes and maybe even break your heart a bit more than expected, they did mine. I'm wondering if McGuinn, Young, Nash, et al -- especially onetime great good friend Nash -- have taken personal stock in a way anywhere near as honestly as Croz does here. Just sayin', you know; these guys have written a ton of songs about the power of love over the years. Well, forgiveness is the light of love, no matter what you do for a living. Highly recommended.

The Contrition of Crosby
I know of no other documentaries I've seen in which the subject matter at hand besmirches his own personal character time and again. David Crosby admits that his greatest mistake is to "get mad" as he talks about running his mouth off at former musical comrades and at other situations. Veteran interviewer Cameron Crowe doesn't let him off easy either. He even gets Crosby to ponder on his own mortality. These two men pull the whole story together and it flows as a complete narrative rather than flashes of events. There's some excellent footage throughout. I particularly like the color and b&w pictures (and his comments) of Joni Mitchell and of a very recent Crosby about to exit a hotel lobby to travel to his next gig to pay the bills. Music is his chief offering and his age and health issues are no barriers to his persistence. And that devilish gleam in Crosby's eyes to Cameron at the end of the flick is playful.P.S. In the extended interviews section of this DVD, former Byrds bandmate Chris Hillman may have given the most interesting commentaries on Crosby, making him an even more complex character. And Roger McGuinn has some interesting insight too.

Learn Your Lessons!
I love Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, in every combination, and if I could get within reach of them, I'd clanged their heads together like Moe. At this stage of the game, you don't understand that you're heading to extra innings if you're going to head anywhere at all, and that all of that petty, ego-driven dross you've gummed up your relationships with means NOTHING, especially when put up against what you've experienced together? Make your peace and revel in each other. And Neil, for the love of God, dumping a decades-old friendship and musical partner AND skipping inducting PJ into the RRHOF because of your girlfriend? So, like, are you in pep squad or, like, student council, huh? Wish David would be less maudlin, and I thought he would be smarter about what comes next, but man, he's making music, good music, he's on the road, and I wish he would enjoy it without looking at all of it as if he has a gun to his head. No pun intended.

Great Documentary
This is an amazingly candid, “warts and all” memoire of one of the most influential musicians of the past 60+ years.. in the end, the viewer is left to judge Crosby’s life and legacy. A must view for those of us who lived through his times or those who wish they did.
