"standard drives" does not sound like a nas (iron wolf) rated 24x7 duty drive. if "standard" desktop model drive, can they be upgraded to nas spec?

Yes, the Buffalo LinkStations use what I would call common home computer drives. Yes, you can replace those drives with any similar size SATA drives. But, I see no need as I have five Buffalos running 24/7 on my network, the oldest purchased in 2009, the newest in 2018. I have had no failures - zero. If you configure the Buffalo to RAID 1 you have no problem even if a drive dies as they are hot-swap and the system does automatic restore on insertion of a new drive.
