Science, true repeatable science proves our history on this planet!
I bought this book because the two younger of my three grandsons in that house were fascinated by dinosaurs. I have taken the eldest of my three grandsons to see the brontosaurus on top of the hill above Rapid City, SoDak; almost five years later he remembers that trip with fondness.I wish I could take all three grandsons from that household to see that area which is so full of fossils.Only time will reveal whether my desires are fulfilled!Scientific study of the great financial sail record in the country reveals our rich non-religious scientific past.

Not engaging
Nominally, this is a book aimed at kids ("A young reader's guide"). But my nephews (6 and 8) found it impenetrable. There's lots of tiny text, full of big words that aren't in their vocabulary. There are lots of facts, but no narrative thread to pull them along. Read it out loud and it's going to sound more like a lecture than a story.Ask yourself: When you bring your child to the museum, do they take the time to read every plaque from start to finish? If so, this book would be great for them! Otherwise, look for something lighter.

not only dinosaurs
It is hard to gauge how interesting the book will be for kids because my review copy was in black and white, and the pictures were hard to see. As it is it did not attract my son's attention. But from the mom's point of view, it was an interesting read. It says dinosaurs on the cover, but maybe half of the book is about dinosaurs and the other half is about other prehistoric life. There were lots of pictures, that I assume, would be bright and colorful and would add to the fun. Lots of facts.

INTERESTING, EDUCATIONAL, AWESOME!!!
SMITHSONIAN DINOSAURS AND OTHER AMAZING CREATURES FROM DEEP TIMEWhat an excellent book! My grand babies -- ages eleven and eight -- will love this book. It is sixty three pages of beautiful illustrations and facts about our planet, the beasts who inhabited it, and the history of Earth through the ages. The age levels are seven to twelve, but this 67 year old lady had a wonderful learning experience reading this book. The pictures are incredible! There are so many facts crammed into this book, yet it is not overwhelming in any way. What a great way to encourage your child to read and learn at the same time. This book would also come in handy for any school reports. The book walks you through Earth from its earliest beginnings, through her many changes - some slowly taking place, others violent -- up to the age of humans. The text is simple and easy to read although, of course, scientific names appear everywhere due to the subject matter. There are fossil pictures that are just beautiful! Each subject matter runs just two pages, enough to learn but not loose the interest of young readers. There are over thirty different 'chapters' -- some include --OUR PLANET'S EPIC STORYRISE OF THE HERBIVORESDEATH FROM OUTER SPACEDINOSAURS HIT THEIR PEAKSo interesting!Author Blake Edgar is a science writer and editor who has had work appear in several publications. He is also co-author of several books. This man knows his stuff! Kids will love this book -- I know I sure did!

Appearances can be deceiving.
It’s an interesting book, covering the evolution of life on earth from the beginning, through the times and types of dinosaurs and creatures co-existing with them, to their extinction, and, briefly, the continuation of life after dinosaurs up to the rise of man.I can’t judge it altogether fairly, because it is made very clear that the copy I have is an uncorrected B&W proof. In final form, with color illustrations and a better cover, I think the book will be pleasantly impressive. In the form I have, it looks like a very young child’s book, while the text is at a higher level, more suitable for someone about 10 or even older. The terminology is precise and the sentence structure is above the abilities of the youngest dinosaur fans.Let me not insult the very young, though; I have known children who were so fascinated by dinosaurs that they would absorb this book at a sitting as soon as they learned to read, even if that was quite early. I am a full grown and educated adult, and I found some information there that I did not have until now. So I recommend it for anyone, regardless of age, as an excellent (and potentially attractive) summary of the subject.

For an older kid
This book works for younger kids, they will like looking at the pictures, they can be read to, etc -- but a lot of the book is more dense paragraphs of text. My 7 year old had issues with a lot of the text, but my 9 year old who is reading quite well, didn't mind it (she did have trouble with some words, but fairly minor).Good book on dinosaurs and those creatures existing around the same time.
