It has good umami flavor
It is good to be a vegan substitute for shrimp paste. Use it in my thai food recommended by a thai cheif. It works well.

Good taste
I used for my Char Shu pork. It added great flavor and color so I did not need to add food coloring. It was hard to find in my local stores. Glad I found here.

better luck ordering the single jar
I purchased this product to make Char Sui. When I purchased the single jar it arrived in perfect shape. Tight seal and no leaks. Worked great for my recipe. A month earlier, I ordered the same product but the double jar set because it was a better value and we'd use it up. When I got the double jar set, the amazon box was damaged and the jars inside were leaking and unsealed even though they had been wrapped in bubble wrap. From reading the reviews, it doesn't seem uncommon for the 2 jars to arrive damaged, whereas the single jar seems to arrive in good condition. I would recommend the product for Char Sui (BBQ Pork) or as an umame flavor in sauces.

Jar was leaking
The jar was wrapped in bubble wrap and the plastic safety seal was unbroken but the jar was still leaking around the lid. When opened, the contents spewed all over the place. Straight into the garbage this one went.

Delicious!!!
How did I not know that this existed? I love discovering “secret” items that when used I go “THAT’S WHAT THE RESTAURANT USES!!”These can be eaten in plain, as a side, or used in marinades. It adds such a depth of flavor that makes you never want the restaurant food again because you CAN cook it at home.

Bought this to use in a recipe. Not really sure what it is. Tastes awful.
I bought this item to make a sauce for Chinese roast pork. There were about a dozen other ingredients, but the recipe called out for this stuff, too. I guess it adds flavor to the sauce, but by itself, it just tastes awful to me. I'm not sure if people eat it out of the jar. I certainly won't.

Just what I needed
Had a hard time finding this at any grocery stores in SoCal. Perfect and essential for my homemade Char Siu. Very pleased with the quality of this product
