Probably a fake (Update at bottom)
The seller that sent mine appears to have attempted a bait & switch! The blade (ruler) is marked PECTOOLS but is missing the winged logo my other PEC tools have and the manufacturer claims is still present. The blade also has unfilled markings at one end.Additionally, the iron head isnt blue hammer tone finish like it should be, the kindling on the knob is different than it should be.I'm sending this one back and trying again, but the one I received appears to be a fake.UPDATE:The seller indicated a "factory second" must have inadvertently been sent. The replacement received is as expected. I am apprehensive for future purchases as you won't be certain as to receiving a Factory 1st or 2nd; and the factory is little help... Regarding the color & logo, PEC said the color is usually blue unless it was a special order for a distributor, however they apparently dont always logo the blade depending on order volumes... Very odd.

Ruler markings came off in a week
At first glance this is a well made square. After one week of moderate use, the 1/8” marker lines between the 1 and 2 were scraped off. It appears the pin that holds the ruler in place is making contact when sliding back and forth.I called the manufacturer and they balked, sending me back to Amazon. I also bought their larger 12” combo square, and wondering if I should return that too.

Great square made in America
I have owned a PEC 12” square for 16 years it came in a snap on tool kit I bought for school. I didn’t know much about the company at that time. I recently wore out a craftsman 6” square that I had for about 5 years and was looking for a replacement. Since I always liked the quality cast iron 12” PEC square I decided to purchase the 6” double. In recent years I had learned that PEC was an American company based in California that makes many quality machinist tools but there business is mostly based on scales / rulers and combo squares and blades. They make squares for many different company’s. The square I received is perfect. The fit and finish is outstanding. The external dimensions and graduations are all crisp without being sharp. The blade is satin Chrome with clear black graduations. The square itself is cast iron with all external surfaces ground very nicely. It’s wonderful to see an American company producing a nice product at a reasonable price. I believe they also sell “blemished” squares and blades on eBay and maybe Amazon for a lower price.

The Square I Received Was Not Good Quality
After researching and reading many positive reviews about PEC squares, I thought this would be a good buy. But when I received it, I was very disappointed. The blade wobbled left and right even after tightening the thumb screw. It was just not the quality I was expecting especially in this price range. I returned this square and looking to buy another brand.

Understated Excellence
The PEC Double Square - 7105-406 4R - was received promptly as promised. I checked it against an Incra 7 inch "Guaranteed Square" and found it to be very square, both inside and out. I didn't try a feeler gauge, but holding the two squares together up to a light, could only see the faintest glimmers between them. I doubt that the gap was more than 0.001".Amazon's listing did not make clear which version of this tool would be shipped. I received the "4R" scale, which is marked in 1/8ths, 1/16ths, 1/32nds and 1/64ths. I had expected the "16R" scale, which is marked in 50ths and 100ths, but am OK with this version. One aspect of the description on Pectools.com was a little bit off the mark. The head was described as being 1" x 1/2" x 2.4". I measured mine - and found the width to be very precicely 1" - measuring between 0.9995 and 1.0005 with my inexpensive digital caliper. The thickness was somewhat less than 1/2" - measuring (from my memory) somewhere around 0.465". The length also was less than the stated 2.4" - measuring somewhere around 2.35" (from my memory). Those dimensions are not critical. The PEC philosophy is a nice contrast to that of Incra. Incra likes to make pretty things that are also good. PEC just focuses on making them good. That suits me very well. The PEC tool looks unimpressive - ordinary - but is very precise. That's the way I like it! I expect to be buying more PEC tools - and recommend them to others.

It can be fixed.
The blade of the one I received wobbled a lot and even sipped despite the nut being tight. I added a thin washer under the nut and that fixed the problem. Now it works like a five star product.

Mostly good
I wrote that the 4" was as good as Starrett. This one, not quite. Good in most every respect, except the etched rule appears to be off a bit. It's still quite useful, but I am having second thoughts re just getting a Starrett.

Really convenient size
And up to Precision's usual high build quality. I was particularly happy to find that the rule will also fit my centre finder.
