The BEST I've ever had!
I’ve been recently trying different Matcha powders to see which one is right for me cost and quality wise, so I decided to do a little taste test, and this is my opinion on the 8 that I tested. Note that all are Ceremonial Grade except for Jade Leaf (Culinary Grade) which I’ve been using for cooking and smoothies but included it for comparing color. Cost: Kyoto Dew: $.83/gram Ippodo: $1.37/gram (BEST) Matchabar: $.99/gram Pure Chimp: $.29/gram (WORST) Kenko: $.33/gram Encha: $.65/gram Akira: $.83/gram Jade Leaf (Culinary Grade): $.19/gram Top 4: 1) Ippodo: Hands down the best Matcha I’ve ever tasted, but very pricey to use daily. Sweet, earthy, Intense and complex with an unmatched bright rich green color. This is a special occasion or limited use Matcha for me because of the price. 2a) Akira: The taste is remarkably close to Ippodo but not as complex and has a slight bitterness at the beginning. Sweet, earthy, floral, fresh and complex with a bright rich green color. 2b) Kyoto Dew: A particularly good Matcha that gives a strong herbal and sweet flavor with a subtle bitterness. Sweet, herbal, smooth and slightly complex with an incredible dark (Chlorophyll Dense) rich green color which I love. 3) Encha: A particularly good Matcha but lacks the high complexity of Ippodo and Akira. Mild bittersweet, earthy, nutty, smooth and slightly complex with a bright rich green color. Bottom 3: I didn’t include (Jade Leaf) because it’s Culinary Grade. 7) Pure Chimp: The worst Ceremonial Grade Matcha I’ve tasted. If this is in fact a true Ceremonial Grade Matcha, then it’s not a premium grade. The color, texture, aroma and flavor are on par with Culinary/ Cooking Grade with maybe a slight edge to Pure Chimp in color (see pic) and taste. The price also reflects this. It was by far the cheapest Ceremonial Grade I tested ($.29/gram) and it showed. I see no reason for someone to purchase this product. 6) Matchbar: A decent Matcha, but for the price there are plenty of better options out there (Akira, Encha, Kyoto, Kenko) are all cheaper and better. 5) Kenko: A decent Matcha, but it was very lite with some bitterness that lingered too long. Slightly sweet, grassy, mild bitterness and soft flavor with rich green color. This would be a good start for someone that has never tried Matcha or for someone looking for a softer flavor.

Delicious
I am not a tea expert nor do I claim to be one. I just bought this because I am just getting into matcha and wanted to have my first cup with a very high quality product. I have not tried to make koicha with this matcha; only usucha. I made my usucha by first heating up my bowl. I poured some hot (never boiling) water into my bowl, swished it around a little bit, then dumped it out. Next, I wiped my bowl down with a paper towel. I then added 2 chashaku worth of matcha to the bowl. I find that I do have to sift it before I put it into the bowl or else you will get undesirable lumps in your tea. After that, I take my chasen and whisk it briskly in a "W" motion, careful not to scrape the bottom of the bowl. I then bring the chasen to the top and try to break up the bubbles. I know that you are suggested to pair a sweet along with your tea, but I find it to be enjoyable alone. It is very grassy and earthy. If you are an avid tea drinker, you will probably not notice the slight bitter flavor, but if you are not, there is the tiniest bit. It is not very noticeable though so don't let that deter you. I did not find it bitter at all. The color is a beautiful deep green and it has a very light scent. Note that it does have caffeine in it and I am feeling "perked up" an hour after I drink this. This does not taste anything like the matcha flavored ice creams, yogurts or cakes that I've had anywhere. I don't know how to explain this, but it just tastes very real to me and not artificial. I can tell that this company put a lot of thought and care into their product. This is a very expensive product considering you're only getting 40 grams, but that is the typical amount sold in Japan. Apparently it takes 1 hour to grind 40 grams! Yikes! I would be glad to pay for this again because it is such a high quality product. Next time, I will try to make koicha with it, which has an intense flavor reserved only for the best type of matchas!

Rich unami flavor delicious
I got addicted to matcha lattes with oatmilk at a couple of coffee shops. It wasn't always convenient to go out so I decided to give it a try at home. After reading reviews I purchased this brand. The container was smaller than I expected but you don't need a lot of matcha powder to make a delicious drink. I'm actually still on my first tin. You should invest in some basic equipment to do this right. A small scoop so you're consistent in the amount of matcha you use per cup. A small strainer to get the matcha into a fine powder before mixing with a small amount of warm-hot water (not boiling). A matcha wisk is essential - so is cleaning (rinsing) it thoroughly right away. You need this special wisk to thoroughly and quickly dissolve the powder and get a nice foam on top. I decided to also invest in a matcha mixing bowl. It should be a open curved bowl with a small spout, clear glass so you can tell if you've thoroughly combined the matcha powder with the water. My bowl is large enough that I use it as my drinking cup. I like it with oatmilk so I can't comment on drinking the plain tea. No sweetener is needed if you've used enough powder for your drink. Experiment until you get the strength you like. I no longer enjoy the matcha lattes made in coffee shops. They use inferior pre-mixed matcha. The flavor is disappointing. Making it from scratch is quick, easy, delicious and calming. Easy cleanup with soap and water. My wisk dries on its little stand so it keeps it's perfect shape. I bought all my accessories on Amazon except the small tray I use to keep all my matcha equipment together and organized. I gives me joy to see that tray every day even when I'm not using it. I feel like I hit the jackpot in finding this matcha first. It's so delicious that I never felt the need to compare brands. I've had the match tin for about a year and it's the same quality and flavor as the first time I opened it. The matcha is in a little foil bag inside the tin. I always fold the top of the bag before closing the tin.

Expensive but the best matcha I've ever had by far.
Best matcha I've ever had. It has a rich umami flavor and no bitterness whatsoever. There is also a hint of sweetness with the flavor. Love it but wow is it expensive! 12/2/2 Update. Removing one star because inconsistency in flavor from lot to lot. 9/5/19 I received a 40g container of UMMON-NO-MUKASHI matcha through Amazon. This was the BEST matcha I've ever had. It had a rich umami flavor and no bitterness whatsoever. There is also a hint of sweetness with the flavor. I loved it so much, I recently ordered another canister through Amazon and found this second lot of the same product tasted nothing like the first! There was no rich umami flavor, no hint of sweetness. Unfortunately there was an astrigency and bitterness to this matcha that just wasn't there with the first canister I tried. Is there that much variation in taste from lot to lot? Or is it possible the matcha inside the canister was the wrong grade? I was very disappointed by the second canister and am questioning if it's worth continuing with the ippodo brand if the taste varies this much! Good lot: 2152453 Expiration Date: November 28, 2019 Bad lot: 2162727 Expiration Date: April 9, 2020

This is the best matcha you will ever have
Matcha has excellent calming effects and this stuff tastes heavenly. Smooth, creamy, robust, earthy with a hint of sweetness. This tin contains 40 (1 gram) servings. 1 gram is roughly 1/2 teaspoon. Ippodo's website suggests: For a thin matcha: 1/2 teaspoon matcha powder per 2 ounces water (175 degrees) For thick matcha, 1 teaspoon matcha powder per 1 ounce water (175 degrees) ...I usually do 1/2 teaspoon per 3 oz water and find it to be a nice balance. Of course, the problem is I drink it 2x per day. At that rate, it lasts me about 20 days ; averaging to about $3 per serving/day. Not terrible but in comparison to my daily morning cup of coffee-- 340g/12 oz bag a beans using 42 oz per day lasts me about 8 days at $11.99/bag--$1.50/day I tried to downgrade a notch to Ippodo's Sayaka $30/tin...but it just wasn't the same. Tried several other brands 'high quality matcha' ...not the same. The distinct flavor and health benefits are enough for me to continue buying this one as long as I can manage to afford it.

Amazing
May be small but that’s not unreasonable for the price. This matcha is probably one of the best matcha’s I’ve tried in a while. Definitely the best you will find on Amazon for the price. Fine quality indeed, I only use this for special occasions. Notes of dark chocolate, sweet grass, complex fruit notes and pleasant bitter bite that isn’t unpleasant. Definitely for advanced pallets not turned off by bitterness. Perfect for a caffeine fix that you wish not to crash but slowly simmer off.

I won’t buy one again
As excited as I was, surprisingly this is the most “clumped” matcha I have ever seen taken straight from container-to-cup and the price is too high compared to quality of other organic varieties I have had. It even mentions that the powder will be clumped on the sealed silver bag it even comes in (not a good sign). I can attest this is from the matcha having exposure to heat, condensation, or too much moisture. I live in the desert, so the over-roasting of the matcha with this “type” in the brand has made the quality deteriorate (expiration isn’t until September 2021). Matcha is like wine, all of it is good, but ceremonial grade is like a 100 year old fine wine! I have tried many different types/grades of for over 10 years when matcha 1st started coming to the USA. I feel I can speak from experience and palate. I have also visited Japan, however, I do not feel this is needed for an individual to know the difference between low/high quality matcha. This matcha had no umami aroma out of the bag or in my cup, the color is vibrant green, but had massive chunks, smell of ocean/seaweed, extremely weak aroma/flavor once mixed, & some tannins. If any of you think this is the BEST, I implore you to try more matcha. This one was not pleasant or transporting for me to drink whatsoever. (Picture is immediately after package was opened and put into a strainer)

Perfect Matcha Tea
What I like about this is the perfect flavor not too strong n not too weak. It was recommended to me by Ippudo based on what I had previously that was a limited run flavor n no longer available. I have bought this identical flavor for the past 4 purchases already. I see no reason of switching. I hv tried one other matcha brand but I find myself coming back to Ippudo each and everything. Don’t fix what ain’t broken 🤣
