Rhythm Machines: The rise and fall of the presets
M**Z
The most comprehensive guide to early drum machines ever written!
What it is: a history of the early drum machines, in fact a pretty comprehensive guide of over three hundred named preset drum machines. All the classics are there (Ace Tone, Multivox, Maestro, Univox/Korg, Minipops, Roland CR-78 and TR-series), along with many rhythm units that readers would not even know are in existence. Over two hundred (mainly colour) photographs are included in the book, accompanying either a page or half page description of the rhythm unit, its preset patterns, useful features and current online price guide. What it is not: 1. Expensive - the book is professionally published, edited and formatted and yet is for sale at a very competitive price. 2. A book on the programmable drum units - that will be Rhythm Machines II !!!This book was purchased for a very famous UK music journalist, vintage instrument expert and author of two legendary and comprehensive books on analogue synthesizers - his comments on receiving the copy were:"The book is fascinating – I’m amazed no-one has done it before, and delighted to have yours now it has come to fruition.Lots of fun, and a lot of stuff I had no info about at all."High praise indeed!

Would make a great Mastermind subject!
A very comprehensive A - Z of early drum machines. As far as I know the only book that attempts the subject in such depth - although, this first book only covers the early preset units. Provides a spec run-down complete with at least one picture of each unit - and there are many. I enjoyed the wacky designs and marveled at the thought that these things actually worked. Would have been nice to have more of an insight into the technology used... Can't wait for the follow up, which, according to the author, will include the programmable drum machines we know and love.
