The Art of Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace

A gorgeous collection of Star Wars design art.
This is one of my favorite film design art books, and that's saying something!Consider; every artist represented in this book was working in a world where the Phantom Menace had not yet hit theaters; they hadn't seen it yet themselves, didn't know anything about it other than Star Wars was happening again! It was a time of great hope and excitement. We forget what it was like to be a fan before the dark times... None of these artists knew that disaster awaited! They were working on STAR WARS!!!As such, when they were asked to produce drawings and paintings, they were striving on an almost spiritual level; it is clear in the artwork. They were giving their pencils and pastels their all-time best game. This was their moment! Where their art careers had been leading to all this time! And you can see it in these pages!Even though the Phantom Menace was a terribly disappointing film to many fans, the artwork in this book remains absolutely spectacular. I crack this volume open a couple of times every year just to look for inspiration. If you are an art student or professional with a love for film design, you must own this book. It's that special!

Absolutely beautiful book!
Probably the best one in the Star Wars Art series, it shows a great amount of the concept art of what became the look of an entirely "new" Star Wars galaxy.Forget the technological look of the original trilogy. The lavish look of the planets shown in the new movies started at this point. It was a more spectacular age for the galaxy and the paintings show it.While it is certainly not McQuarrie, Chiang and the other artists do justice to his legacy.Only the art of the original Star Wars can be compared to the scope and breadth of the art displayed in this book. After all, the other four episodes built upon what was already created for the Phantom Menace and a New Hope.A must have for any Star Wars and fantasy art enthusiast.

Awesome artwork but big difference between Paperback and Hardback versions
Note: The paperback version of this book is small and the Hardback version is the standard size "Art of Star Wars" books and the full book. Hopefully this helps others! The artwork however is awesome despite the small size of the book.

Nice
There are two versions of this book, the hardcover which is the full version, and the paperback which is about 1/4 of the hardcover book. I owned the paperback version first and really enjoyed the art so I decided to buy the full version which was the hardcover edition. I have purchased all 6 of The Art of Star Wars book and this is one of my favorites. Make sure you double check and understand what version you are purchasing because I have seen there is some confusion among the different versions.

A lovely little (and I do mean little) book of some awesome Star Wars preproduction art
I ordered this book without carefully reading the description, that this was actually a mini-edition for the Widescreen Video Collector Edition of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace on video (released some years ago). The book is 7 by 8.3. inches, a fraction of the oversized paperback book with the same artwork. Though this little book doesn't have all the artwork, it has some highlights from the bigger book, such as Doug Chiang's lovely paintings (e.g. the planet Naboo; a pod race) and character concepts. If you're a big fan of the movie and especially its visual concepts, then get the bigger book. Still, this book is a nice little appetizer...

A masterpiece
If you are looking for the best Star Wars art book ever published, you just hit it! You will find inside, sketches, drawings and never before seen depictions of the Star Wars Episode One creatures and spaceships! The book is beautifully crafted and wonderfully arranged... and its a pleasure to stroll trough those pages. Special attention to the creative development of worlds must be given for sure! Feel the power of the force when you see the scary drawings of gargantuan Coruscant...and the weird Darth Maul....and surely, enjoy Naboo: the City of Theed chapter, where you will find how it evolved from inks to a Space Renaissance paradise!

I am an avid collector of StarWars art books and "The Art of..." book series are my favorites. Every fan will love this.
The StarWars art books offer you a further glimpse into the world of star-wars that the movies cant by offering rich and highly detailed drawings, sketches and development of the films.

A must-have book for every Star Wars fan
I can't imagine any serious Star Wars fan could live without a copy of this book. These days it can be picked up for not much money. It is certainly one of the better "Art of" books, featuring an impressive array of artwork from all stages of the movie's development. It also includes words from George Lucas, and a host of knowledgeable people. The artwork is well presented, on glossy paper, and printed to a high standard. some "Art of" books have been a real let-down, but this one shines on every page. It is fascinating in the technical and imaginative brilliance of the artists. It's a book that offers a massive amount of artwork for a low price. A bargain!

Fairly good for for its age
The cover it's a little wear but the inside is like new. No damaged pages. Important to say the pages are glossy and thick. I love the quality of those books. For the art book itself, a outstanding 208 pages of concept art, sketches and drawings from the first movie that shows the creative process of bringing to life the Star Wars different creatures. Leaving aside some aspects of the film, Episone One has a rich and colorful art and visually is just amazing, from the high tech visuals of space ships and droids, to the organic, and diverse creatures that populates the strange worlds of Star Wars universe.
