Savinelli Roma Rustic 320 Lucite Stem Tobacco Pipe

Fancy
I'm semi new to pipes this was my first over $25 purchase. I'll say, don't expect it to clear up bad packing habits, nor to burn every bowl to a fine ash. It's the nature of the beast, and part of the learning process that will clear up those problems. That said, this is a fine pipe, I have nothing to compare it to, but I'll say its BEAUTIFUL by comparison to my meerschaum, and Grabow. Nice big bowl, with more humid tobaccos, close to an hour smoke, and with drier classics, at least 30 minutes. It's not for the clencher, as, it's heavy on the front, more for looking way more sophisticated than you are by holding it in your hand like a detective in a black and white movie. The finish and the stem are stunning, it's like a peice of art.

Not good
Through it in the wood burner. After over a month of trying to break the his pipe in it taste like an ashtray. Bad briar. Not cured properly. Terrible.

One of my favorite Pipe
Of all my Briar pipes this is one of my favorites. I own quite a few and have some really good pipes, so that is saying something. I smoke this one at least 1-2 times per week so it makes it into rotation a bit more than any of the other briar pipes I own.Mine might have particularly good Briar but, honestly, if you are going for a manufactured pipe Savanelli is hard to beat. For the price Pererson and Briar Works are the only comparable I think of instantly, Maybee a higher end Kaywoodie. You honestly have to go higher in the Dunhill line to beat this. I am not sure it is comparing Apples to Apples trying to compare it to Bosswell pipe or other good handmade pipes and it depends where you are in the Nordingas to how comparable it is. Unless you want to go Estate it would be hard to beet this in a sub $500 pipe as far as quality of smoke and fit and finish. It is not super flashy but I still think it is a bit of a looker with the Lucite stem. There is something beautiful in it's simplicity.I exclusively smoke English or Scottish blends out of it now, though I think I smoked Peter Stokabeys 24 Nougat out of it initially (what they smoked for the filming of Lord of the Rings). I have probably also smoked Country Squire Middle Earth blends out of it at one point too but as of now it is primarily English and an occasional Scottish pipe for me and I dont go much sweeter than something with added Cavendish in it now.It is particularly good at Englishes but I did enjoy the few aforesaid aromatics out of it. I do not think it would be great for strait Virginia blends or vapors. It is also good for primarily burley blends like a Haunted Bookshop and I have enjoyed Kentucky Dark fired blends in it too. It is great fot Lat Bombs but does light English well too.It has thick walls and gets warm but not hot. It smokes cool and dry for me. It fits my hand well and just feels good; I do tend to like the author shapes. I have more expensive pipes but this is a familiar favorite. I do not typically smoke it with a filter and have one of those Savanelli filter adapters in mine. It holds a good amount of tobacco and a full bowl typically lasts 45 min to an hour for me. It has been one of the pipes I smoke a couple times a week for several years now. It is easy to clean and easy to run a pipe cleaner through. On the very rare occasion I have a tobacco that is smoking a bit wet I just run a pipe cleaner through to absorb any moisture and it clears right up.This is not one I often clinch for long periods, though I can clinch it if I want. This would never be the pipe I grab if I am trying to work with my hands but it is a great reading or contemplating pipe. For some reason Boswells Countryside and Northwoods taste particularly good in it. I love GL Pease Quit Nights in it but it is also great with Early Morning and other lighter English blends too.Full disclosure I am not a pipe snob. I have a few Dr Grabow I enjoy, and I honestly love smoking out of Missouri Meerschaum. I have Nording I enjoy, do not currently have a Dunhill and am only starting to dabble in more premium pipes but still think the Roma Lucite 320 ks is hard to beat.Is this a Von Erch - heck no! Is it a particularly good manufactured pipe - absolutely.

Great pipe but had a crack in the bowl...
Pipe smokes great but unfortunately had a crack in the bowl. Luckily the Crack doesn't seem to effect the draw but for what I spent it does upset me. Wish I would have inspected closer before using the pipe. I will be buying from a different source next time I purchase a Savinelli!
