Daily Readings - Matthew Henry

Old but best of the best
Matthew Henry is one of the best of the best English divines and his commentary always has something of value even for 21st century readers. This devotional is rich, but must be read with care as sentence structure and word usage have changed over the centuries. As far as I can determine there are no contemporary authors that can hold a candle to the English evangelical commentators that had disciplined minds honed at Oxford or Cambridge.

full leather bound
The physical description is wrong. This is not paperback. It is full leather bound with the classical binding of sewn booklet sections. The covers are flexible and not reinforced with boards as is used most of the time with full leather binding. The author is one of my favorites. I have read the entirety of his six volume commentary set from which these readings have been taken. The author was a pastor about 300 years ago and makes observations and statements which are useful in our everyday lives.About a third of the selections are from the Psalms.

Lovely book. Terrible type font!
The devotional is lovely, and the covers of the little book are nice, but the print is absolutely so small I almost need a microscope to read it! That was disappointing, as I had ordered three of these books as gifts. If the publisher could print it in larger type, I would highly recommend the little book, but at its present type font -must be a 6 - most who would be reading a Matthew Henry devotional require at least a 10 or 12 font.

Clear, Concise, and Biblical
My family and I are using Matthew Henry's Daily Readings as part of our evening family worship. Matthew Henry is one of the easiest Puritans to read and it is a spiritual blessing to be able to include his biblical insights in our walk with the Lord. Too many 'devotionals' in our current age focus on self-help steps; it is refreshing to have a resource that is totally focused on the Bible and what it has to teach us about our Sovereign God.

Daily Devotions by one of the best Commentary Writers in History
Here is another Classic Solid Daily Devotional by one of the Best Commentary writers in History. Matthew Henry was once robbed and said, "Let be me Thankful to the LORD that 1) I was Not Harmed or Killed 2) That what they took can be replaced 3) That it was I who was robbed NOT I WHO ROBBED." This is meet for your daily walk. Let me also recommend any Devotionals by John MacArthur that you can find. And Oswald Sanders.

Very thoughtful!
We've been using this as a part of our daily devotions since receiving it. The writings are mostly pretty deep which leads us to thinking more seriously rather than considering it something we need to do each day. Because of its depth, not everyone would appreciate it unless they realize the scholar M. Henry was. I consider it a privilege to have this copy - nicely leather-bound, handy size to fit a hand or purse.
