Can you tell me the width in millimeters of the 7-speed 14-28 freewheel? I need to determine if it will fit my current 6 speed bike and axel

The width from bearing side to side is 350 mm, which equates to 1 and 3/8 inch. the inner side does have threads on the inside of it. Some come without threads

Will it work on my 12-speed Schwinn Ranger?

No! This is a 7 speed freewheel. Don't think it's interchangable with a 12 speed. You would need different derailer, different shifter, probably spacers, etc.
