With this new edition, The Insider's Guide to the Colleges has been, for 41 years, the most relied-upon resource for high school students looking for honest reports on colleges straight from the college students themselves. Having interviewed hundreds of their peers on more than 330 campuses and by getting the inside scoop on everything from the nightlife and professors to the newest dorms and wildest student organizations, the reporters at the Yale Daily News have created the most candid college guide ever. In addition to the in-depth profiles, this edition has been updated to include: * Essential statistics for every school, from acceptance rates to popular majors * A "College Finder" to help students zero in on the perfect school * All-new FYI sections with student opinions and outrageous advice The Insider's Guide to the Colleges cuts through the glossy Web sites and brochures to uncover the things that matter most to students, and by staying on top of trends, it gives both students and their parents the straightforward information they need to choose the school that's right for them. Review: College/University Sampler - The Insider's Guide To The Colleges (41st Edition) Students On Campus Tell You What You Really Want To Know (compiled and edited by the Staff of The Yale Daily News) features a sample list of colleges/universities across the United States. The address of each college andor university mentioned, the year that the college andor university was founded, the deadline and approximate application fee at the time of the writing of each college/university featured, an educational place on the east coast where a multiple number of students in their free time are known for working at their places of employment andor volunteering, a university listed in this book on the east coast where a significant number of students feel that there are a variety of options to study college major wise (listed to be a commuter type of school in a wealthy suburb page 506), a school with an abundant range of extracurricular activities and clubs (page 110) and more. The caveat is that a multiple number of colleges are unlisted in this book. Still this book is strong for gathering some ideas. Review: Great resource. - Have given this to two high school seniors. Great resource. My daughter used it 30 years ago and I thought it was valuable resource.

older but relevant
The info is not terribly up to date anymore (was accurate for my first college kid, less so for the third now). but It still gives a fairly accurate view of the "feel" of most colleges. This only covers about the top 250 or so schools in the US.

It has information she hasn't seen elsewhere and is helping her to make great choices for her potential school list
My 11th grader thinks this book has been very helpful. It has information she hasn't seen elsewhere and is helping her to make great choices for her potential school list...

Too many colleges missing and obviously colleges must pay to be in the book
It's obvious that the colleges (unless they are really big and important) have to pay to be in this book. Many large public schools are not mentioned at all, while some very small colleges with fewer than 1000 students are included. If you are going to Havard or Yale, you no doubt already know enough about those schools.

Very Useful!
Still a quality product. Used it myself many decades ago, then used for older kids. Really gives an accurate sense of each school.

Not as zesty as it was when I was in high school (1970's)
The Insider's Guide has become much more corporate, bloated and schematic than it was originally. The charm of the original editions was its unapologetic iconoclasm and its eschewal of statistics, which were the meat and potatoes of the mainstream college guides. The current Insider's Guide wants to be an all-in-one machine, totally unnecessary with the Internet as a research tool. So I'm not so thrilled about it. I don't think it's going to fire the imaginations of my teenage sons, honestly.

Strongly recommended!
Interesting for college wannabes to read what current students are experiencing at a significant number of some top institutions country-wide.It's like the missing ingredient to Fiske, which I'd strongly suggest as a companion.
