Storm Glass (Harbinger Book 1)

worth your patience
I struggled for months to really get into this book—mostly, I believe, because Wheeler’s book are usually set in the past, somewhere and at some time not really defined. This book is set in the future, where there are flying machines, but where Victorian society would be right at home, judging, gossiping, manipulating people into losing everything—maintains the status quo that keeps the wealthy in power by destroying people, families, and fortunes, and keeping the poor uneducated and “controlled.” It still has elements of magic and, towards the end, a familiar landmark from previous books. (No spoilers.) Though it started slowly, I’m glad I stuck with it…for these are stories of the descendants of those who lived centuries before in the author’s previous series. Magic, self-realization, finding greater purpose in a sometimes dark world, and one’s unassailable sense of honor, as well as a burning desire to help the less fortunate are themes our characters confront. It’s a departure in setting for Wheeler, but as you near the end of this book, a sense of familiarity welcomes you home. Looking forward to the next in the series.

A well done start to a coming of age story
Easy to read, and nicely structured plot that keeps building tension. I though there would be one plot twist that did not happen so the end kind of lost a little anticipation but the mystery not being what I guessed makes me want to find out the truth of it. Highly recommend it.

A promising beginning...
...to what feels like it will be another series from Jeff Wheeler filled with deep characters and powerful plotlines. Can't wait to start book 2.

Love all things Muirwood
There aren't many Muirwood and Muirwood-related books that I haven't read yet, and I find them all thoroughly enjoyable. The eternal fight of good vs evil. For me, though, the biggest challenge for a writer lies in creating characters about which the reader will care. That is what Mr. Wheeler has done beautifully, in addition to creating fascinating worlds in which they live. Very imaginative and satisfying reads.

Engaging and exciting
Storm Glass is yet another excellent book by Jeff Wheeler. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy novel written with the feel of a period piece that is complete with hopes and dreams that are both dashed and realized. There are ghosts, science, magic, intrigue, floating manors, power struggles, mysteries, and, of course, a few unexpected twists. Storm Glass gets five stars from me because I felt immersed in the world and was able to relate to many of the characters on different levels. As both Cettie and Sera learn more about the world in which they live, my mind was racing—striving to make the same connections and understand the same mysteries that they were trying to understand. I felt keenly for the plight of both girls who, though they come from seemingly different worlds were both striving and yearning for freedom and knowledge.I enjoyed the differing perspectives and came up with many theories of my own as to why things happened the way that they did. Some were proven wrong, but as I read I felt a part of that world. As I neared the end of the book, I began to feel some tension (in a good way) that some of the issues wouldn’t be resolved by the end of the book. Knowing that it was going to be a five-book story arc, I worried that I would be left on a major cliffhanger. While I felt some things were resolved quite quickly at the very end, it was just enough resolution to create a sense of closure while leaving enough in the air (pun intended) that I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I felt that this book was written in crescendo. The further I read, the more exciting the story became.I found it a gripping story and I personally blame a good author for keeping me up too late at night when I should have been sleeping. I found the world a fun place to visit in my mind and contemplate its realities. I felt that virtually all of the characters were engaging and relatable in some way. While dealing with some heavier social issues that the protagonists were faced with, I still found it a fun read that kept my mind engaged as I tried to unravel some of the mysteries myself. At times I felt that if I could just figure some of the mysteries out, that it would somehow enable me to reach through the pages and help our protagonists.I commend Jeff Wheeler for another well written story that is different enough from his other books that it feels new and fresh, while maintaining a few familiar elements that connect his worlds. He masterfully unfolds new adventures through the eyes of two different protagonists while throwing in enough unexpected twists that make things come together in exciting ways. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to explore a new world with relatable characters, a touch of magic, and engaging mysteries.Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Tribulation and Triumph
More plummeting and soaring can be found in Storm Glass than in a raptor’s flight pattern. A Horatio Alger-esque tale where the heros are young girls and the setting is a fantasy empire loaded with action, intrigue and vivid characters who provoke an extreme response. Terribly addictive. Do not attempt unless you have the possibility to shirk daily responsibilities for as long as it takes you to reach the last page.

Very solid start for this new era
Hopefully you're like new, starting this book without knowing much shit it (I just really loved the author's previous books). Because then the ending would take you by such surprise as it did me!Without any spoilers, the characters are very charming, and there people they face truly are scary and show how much they still have to grow.

Good for the imagination
I initially started reading storm glass to vet it for my 11year old granddaughter. I always like to see if books are suitable for her age. I am 76 and enjoyed the book so much I am now into book 4 in the series and have pre-order book 5. I believe she would enjoy reading these books and feel confident in suggesting them to her, as I would to any age group.

Be prepared to be hooked, Jeff Wheeler's style is totally addictive.
If you are already a fan of Mr Wheeler, you need no convincing of the quality of his story-telling. If you are wondering, as a first-timer, whether to read this book, please accept an unequivocal yes as it is a great entry into his ability to paint word pictures of worlds that might just exist outside of his imagination. If this really does turn into the first of his books to join your library, be prepared to be hooked.

Good Foundation Book
I very much enjoyed this book and had bought it completely on a whim! It's not generally what I read these days after exhausting every fantasy novel there was to read, when I was in my teens and twenties. I gave up pretty much reading this genre as nothing really gripped me. Fast forward...ahem...a couple of decades later...I decided to try again as the synopsis intrigued me. I'm rather glad I did!The book drew me in and definitely created an atmosphere that transported me right into the world. Few books do this nowadays I feel, so before long I was quite immersed in the main character's story. It kind of felt akin to our world but with a 'Victorian' feel to it where children were made to work and neglected. The themes of money and power are universal and that some people are driven to do the right thing despite all they might lose.I did feel that the book was probably aimed at teenagers or young adults but that never stopped me reading it right to the end.One last point, I was very disappointed because I was drawn to read the book by price, as it was on offer. However, the second book is either very overpriced, in audiobook format or unavailable which is frustrating to say the least!

A Light intro to a fantasy world.
I read Storm Glass as a one off fantasy choice , away from my regular choices of fiction. I found Storm Glass a compulsive yet light read. The prose flowed as did the superb plot , of a different world of two classes , the working class urchins in squalid Dickens Victorian tenements and the elite gentry living up in the manor and estates in the skies and clouds. In a world linked by zephyr sky ships. With superb characters and rich senses of touch , smell and sight.Join young Cettie , from the world below taken to the clouds by a lord Fitzroy and The world of the privileged Sera in the world above ! A great read for all ages that I found blended shades of CS Lewis's Narnia Chronicles , mildly With George Martins current Westeros tales.
