If you make mead or wine, you'll probably already have one of these...
This is perfect for making mead or wine (or beer) when you're fermenting in a large fermenter (3-5 gallons). This is excellent, especially with the clamp that keeps the end at a fixed point of your choosing inside the fermenter when siphoning the liquid from the lees.

Didn't work, too small
My old siphon mechanism is getting harder to use and I sometimes get a mouthful of beer or wine getting it started, so I bought this one thinking I would not have to manually suck on the hose to get it started anymore. I was surprised at how small it was. It is not long enough to fit into a 5-gallon glass carboy. I tried to use it anyway and attached the hose. The hose is not the right diameter because it cracked when I attached it. I did manage to get it attached using the other end. I tried to get the siphon working by pumping it as they recommend in the instructions but could not get it to successfully begin the siphoning process. The siphon part doesn't appear to be airtight enough, either. Sending it back!

Great Benefits, Great Disappointments
The design is ingenious and the price makes it affordable for almost everyone.I've always used a bulb siphon. Admittedly, this racking cane siphon method is extremely wonky to operate in some ways and yet so much more efficient in other ways. If I had someone helping me, it'd be a breeze. The end cap kept out all of the lees in my brew. That was a huge plus when racking off a brew! The pitfall to the protective cap at the end is that it doesn't like to come off. In fact, I had to get pliars to force mine off.The hose itself is far too small in diameter. It barely, barely fits the siphon hose and truly doesnt want to fit my bottling wand.

Waster of moeny, only tube works
The siphon does not work and it is poorly designed.Lots of strong and fast pumping cycles needed for it to get going (not airtight?). This stirs up lees in the liquid which means I'll need to siphon again. Also the design does not allow to siphon the last ~5-7 bottom cm of liquid without seriously stirring up the lees.I ended up just sucking on the tube to get it going manually, which was EXACTLY what I was trying to avoid.

This works well for me
A great item and a real help to the wine brewer! It’s generally easy to use, although I found the clip securing the tube to the demijohn a little fiddly, but not a problem.

Yhis is made of cheap plastic tubes the pump tube does not seal to create a suction it sticks when trying to slide up and down and even if wet sown with some liquid. Talked to seller and got no results just try this and try that and no talk of it being defective! So I bought a good one from a diy brewing supplier and it works great!
