Do you need a speaker box in the ceiling to mount these or do you just cut a hole in the drywall and install them?

Its been a while since I installed mine but I do recall the instructions telling you to allow a moderate amount of space around the speaker; something like 1 foot by 1 foot. You do not specifically need a speaker box but your ceiling construction will affect the acoustics so if you find you have no bass, you may need some type of enclosure or baffle behind the speaker. I have four of these speakers installed in a 8 foot flat ceiling which has my attic space open to it and they sound great; one speaker mounting hole is secured to a 2x4 attic beam and the remaining mounting holes are secured to just the drywall. I left the fiberglass insulation in the attic so that it rested on the back of the speaker and again, the speakers sound really good. I also have a 10 inch subwoofer in the living area to handle the real low-end sound but these speakers provide a solid thump which sounds great.

Has anyone used them in a home theater, preferably in an Dolby Atmos setup?

Using 4 of them in a 7.2.4 Atmos setup and they work perfectly, The tweeters are even adjustable so you can point them as I had to do since my ceiling is vaulted hip style. Everyone even the least technical people who never heard of atmos of dts-X walk away impressed.

\Which makes a better frontspeaker set up. 3 or these or 1 MTM with a 6.5 or 8 for left and right? How about these for rear speakers too. I like the idea of 5 identical speakers, but not if this isn't a suitable main (with a sub of course).

I went with 8" for front right and two rears and the dual 5.25 for center. If I were to do it again I would have done two 8s for the center. The duals sound good but need a little more of the lower frequencies

Micca doesn't make towers with 8 inch drivers. I was thinking of buying these and building wooden towers using mdf or something. Bad idea ?

If you are wanting a two way system with a single 8" and tweeter, it should work fine. I'd stay away from any kind of venting unless you have reliable Thiel-Small parameters, but I would definitely recommend stuffing the box with AcoustiStuff or similar. I don't recall if Micca published T-S numbers for the woofer, but since it's made to go in a wall, I presume it's designed for a fairly forgiving infinite baffle alignment. Good luck!

With the help of the approximative dimensions needed for the In-wall installation, we built two 5/8" prefinished MDF 14" X 11" X 5 3/8" enclosures to accommodate these kits even using the actual tabs of those for the In-box installation, not forgetting either some fluffy fibrous material to somewhat damper some inner frequencies. The result, probably the best sounding speakers in our house driven by a 100 W / channel tube amp, surprisingly, absolutely everything is there, bass, mids and highs ! The voices are like nothing we've heard before, very clear and cristalline, not too much, just perfect ! The percussions are another highlight of these speakers, crisp and percussive, we're very happy with the end result, no doubt, a similar In-wall installation will surely give you similar stellar results ! Good products easily adaptable ! Thank you !

Excelentes bocinas!!! las puse como central y delanteros en mi sistema de teatro y se oyen muy bien, se definen mejor los sonidos que en mis monitores klipsch, 100% recomendables, ahora hay que ver su durabilidad.

Tengo 2 pares en techo para sonido Atmos y un par traseras y lo único que puedo decir es que tienen un desempeño que me ha sorprendido. Las tengo empotradas en tablaroca y agarran fuerza los bajos. La verdad estoy muy contento con la compra.

These speakers sound really great. It took me two years before I installed them, but they just are wonderful to hear. And not that expensive. Quality vastly outweighs the price. Lots of bang for your buck. Not that hard to install, when I actually got down to doing it.
