Ich habe mir das Buch aus zweierlei Gründen gekauft: Zum einen wollte ich meine Englischkenntnisse auffrischen und zum anderen interessieren mich schöne Hotels. Beide Bedürfnisse konnte ich mit diesem gelungenen Werk verbinden. Die Leben des Luxushotel-Gründers Ritz und des begnadeten Kochs Escoffier wurden gut recherchiert und spannend erzählt.

If, like me, you do your reading in the bathroom, this book is perfect. By the time you get completely bored with it, you're finished with your business. No more sleepy legs!

Ritzy, one could say
This is lighter history if we are to measure it by indicators such as lives lost, or the rise or fall of empires, or by how humanity’s fate is altered. However, in a more circumscribed context, where impact is measured by how our tastes and indulgences are shaped, and by how luxury became redefined and accessible outside the aristocracy, although to say “democratized” would be a stretch, this is history too. If despite this, you still think that the lives of Ritz and Escoffier, the hotelier and the chef, are too frivolous a subject, and you don’t entirely buy the idea of Peach Melba and Grand Marnier being a worthy legacy, I would suggest you make this book a summer read, just don’t discard it, as you would be missing out on very good entertainment. Ritzy, one could say.
