Smells Good, Works Well, Priced Reasonably, No Bad Ingredients
Van Der Hagen Shave Butter works well, smells good, contains no questionable ingredients, and is reasonably priced. All those qualities together in one product are nearly impossible to find. Just identifying a shaving cream or gel that has no undesirable ingredients is going to eliminate at least 95% of the products out there... no exageration... it is extremely rare to find a shaving cream that has ony a small list of mostly natural ingredients... but this is such a "junk free" product. Once you have identified the fewer than 5% of shaving creams or gels that have an acceptable healthy list of ingredients, you are hit with the next problem: most high quality shaving products (and even most of the low quality ones) are shockingly expensive. The often run $2 to $5 per ounce or more. Some are unashamedly close to $10 per ounce! Particularly the higher end of that pricing scale is absurd, and offensive. I mean, SILVER is $23 per ounce as I write this... are you really going to pay one quarter to one-third of the spot price of SILVER bullion per ounce for your shaving cream? This Van Der Hagen Shave Butter is close to $1 per ounce, which still seems a bit pricey to me, but actually places it among the lowest cost products of its kind. Next, it smells good. Many shaving products do not. Finally, it works well. Super thick aerosol shaving creams which create a Santa Claus like layer of whipped cream on your face an inch thick are silly. The only part of that actually providing moisturization and lubrication for your beard is the perhaps 10% of it that is right on your skin... the rest serves no purpose. This product does not foam up thick and tall... it just creates a thin layer exactly where you need it... on your skin. I have not found anything better.

Good choice, a comparison against other similar products
Like many, I was hoping to find an cheaper alternative to Dr. Carver's Shave Butter (6oz ~$8.00) So that said, I'll compare Dr. Carver's to Van Der Hagen Shave Butter, but also some other alternatives (Jack Black Supreme Cream, Cremo Shave Cream, and Herban Cowboy). First off, just because a product calls itself "butter" doesnt mean it really is. I think that Dr. Carver's set an expectation that a shave butter, well resembles butter, in that its slick and translucent when applied. Van Der Hagen, in that sense, is not a butter, but a cream. Van Der Hagen. 6oz. $5.97: Smells good, gives a smooth shave, a little goes a long way, is not "sticky" like other creams. I have a goatee, so the beauty of Dr. Carver's is that is translucent, and I can easily see the lines of the goatee, and get a super clean shave. Creams sort of "get in the way", and have to be wiped away to see the lines of a goatee, which can be a pain. That said, Van Der Hagen wiped away more easily that the others below. Jack Black. 2.6oz. $13.00: Not a "butter", but a cream. A little goes a long way. It does have a "tinglee" sort of sensation, which I dont like, but perhaps others would. It is more expensive than any of the shave products reviewed. Cremo. 6oz. $7.19: Smells nice. Not a butter, but a cream. Gives a close shave. A little thick, so its tough to brush away from goatee lines when shaving Herban Cowboy. 6.7oz: $6.99: Not a butter, but a cream. Insanely sticky, so very difficult to brush away from goatee lines. Gives an "OK" shave. To me not a contender. So, all that said. With Van Der Hagen you are saving yourself a few bucks, getting a nice smell, and can get it here on Amazon. Hope this helps.

An average shave butter
Above average as a shave butter. It performed reasonably well, but much better over shaving oil. I compared with putting a regular gel over the shave oil, and that was actually better than the shave butter.

3 dabs all it takes
I have been trying this our first to see wassup before an initial review. So far each cut is smooth. For men with light beards i recommend 3 dabs of the creame
