If you love literature and prefer a travel size books, that’s perfect for you. But if you struggle reading small font, better order different one.

I read this (and “David Copperfield”) in high school and didn’t like either. “Tale” is better with the passage of six decades, but it still has significant flaws. Dickins women are unbelievable – I don’t recall who described Dickens’ women as legless virgins, but the description is accurate. They never kiss or indicate any sexual interest – ever. They have no intellectual interests, ever. This is emphatically NOT a function of the Victorian Era: George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, W.M. Thackery each bring living, breathing, vital women from the page to life. Doyle created Irene Adler; Haggard, She – both well beyond Dickens imagination.Dickens has his strengths: His description of the poverty in Britain and in the Old Regime are powerful. A cask of wine bursts in front of Defarge’s wine shop; the neighbors drink the mixture of wine and mud from the street directly with Dickens descriptions disgusting. But Dickens delicacy omits the horse hockey pucks which seasoned the brew. Dickens describes the amorality of the aristos pre revolution including horrors such as the casual killing by whim, the enforced poverty of the peasants, and the droit du seigneur enforced on the nubile. When Dickens describes the Reign of Terror, the Paris mob mindlessly seeks blood, blood and more blood; heads, heads, and more heads. Liberty, Equality, Fraternity or Death.The story as presented: Brits are entangled in the Reign of Terror. The Hero at imminent peril from the guillotine. However, there is a buried story running parallel. A bright British drunk, a wastrel, goes to Paris and dies what today would be called suicide by cop. Dickens describes this suicide as heroic and beneficial. Fooey!

I had to read it for an assignment and this thing is great if you want a nice nap 😊
