Will it work with Century Link?

As of about a month ago, it NO longer was/is compatible with my Century Link DSL- in Portland Oregon as the VDSL lines were upgraded and customers were not informed via Century Link and Netgear. Thus had to purchase another compatible modem to accommodate the Century Link upgrade.

If i have dsl service, do i need this kind of modem to couple with my router?

Whether the modem will work for you depends on more than just which provider you have. Many of these third party modems work with many if you have the right service. Call your provider and see if you are on BONDED or unbonded service. If you are on BONDED, it will NOT work for you as it requires a different hardware configuration inside the modem to work (basic explanation=it uses 2 modems to break signal into 2 lines to and from the provider to get their higher speeds). ANY modem that works with your provider will work with any router as it only requires a good wired signal from the modem. I ran a Cisco router with my CenturyLink, a Linksys, Belin & Netgear with my WindStream service. We run ASUS, Cisco, Belkin & Netgear routers with our Comcast service at work.Now, if you are inquiring as to whether you NEED a router hooked to this to get wifi or if it in built in, yes, you need a router as this is a MODEM ONLY.Hope that helped explain things in greater detail.
