The importance of armored cars during the wars of the Soviet State, 1936 to 1945
Very interesting history of armored cars (wheeled armored fighting vehicles) during the first thirty years of theformer USSR, from 1917 through 1946. The Russians seemed to value these vehicles more than most of the other great military powers. This predated the Russian Revolution of 1917. Tsarist Russia acquired some British-built armored cars between 1906 and 1914 as well as building their own variants of these vehicles. This volume deals mostly with the development and use of Soviet wheeled armored vehicles from the 1930's into the Second World War. The Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 was a proving ground for the use of armored vehicles ofall types, including armored cars used by Russian forces fighting for the Republican side. They were also used inRussia's limited fighting during the occupation of eastern Poland in 1939 and months later in the more difficultWinter War against Finland in 1939-40. When Germany invaded the USSR in 1941, hundreds of these vehicleswere in the field and many were destroyed in the early fighting. The German forces, like the Finns in 1940-41, used captured Soviet armored cars against Stalin's forces during the war, a testament to the ruggedness and durability of these Russian armored fighting vehicles. Well-illustrated with rare photographs and full-color plates of the models and variants of these unique military vehicles.

In the absence of a tank...
In the absence of a tank, an armored car might just have the firepower, armor protection and mobility to get the job done. This brief but informative history of early Soviet armored cars suggests just that. As author Jamie Prenatt notes, the Soviets experimented with a variety of weapons and armor packages on what were essentially civilian automobile and truck chasses. Some of these vehicle types would see operational use from the mid-1930s through the Second World War.The narrative walks the reader up through a succession of models of armored cars. The text includes lots of period photographs and modern illustrations. The operational history is brief but especially interesting. Recommended to students of mobile warfare, especially as practiced by the Soviet Union.

Highest quality
I now know everything I need to know about Soviet armored in the pre WWII and WWII years. The Soviets kept trying to find the right combination of firepower, horsepower, and armor. They never did get it quite right but it didn't stop them from trying. Eventually, they just got a thin-skinned car with moderate power and a small degree of cross-country ability, and a big gun. It worked well enough for them. This slender volume seems to be complete to me. Even cars with small runs are described. The drawings give us a good idea of how the actual cars looked and the vast array of vintage photos really add a lot to our knowledge of the subject. This is good. Recommended.
