Carbon Capture (The MIT Press Essential Knowledge series)

A highly readable and thoughtful analysis of carbon capture and storage
This book is a quick read, because it is carefully written, and well thought out. It covers a lot of ground, and is still largely up-to-date, although rapid changes in the energy transition make that hard to do. For example, the decline of coal and rise of natural gas has already substantially change the energy mix described in an early chapter based on 2016 data! Nevertheless, the balanced review of a wide range of options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the clear-eyed distinction made between renewable energy policy and climate change mitigation policy is extremely valuable. I heartily recommend this book, and hope it will be updated as the energy transition moves forward.

great book
Pragmatic solutions of the any and all variety. Great basic introduction and foundation, but not too basic.

The Best Primer on Carbon Capture
This is an excellent non-technical primer on the world of carbon capture & sequestration. I have recommended it to many colleagues in the valve and piping industry. The author is a very good wordsmith and the book is a quick read and is valuable for future reference. It covers all the major carbon capture, transmission and storage processes.

Well written and accessible
This is a well written and accessible book about an important technology for the energy and industrial economies. Dr. Herzog gives practical examples and points out the important role carbon capture will play in our future.

Excellent discussion of the problems
This book was just what I wanted. It gives a background into the whole problem of climate change resulting from carbon emissions, understandable to a layman. It also describes ways to address the problem, the pros and cons of various proposed solutions, and I completely agree that there is no one solution, but many that have to work together. The Green New Deal people should read this. It is intelligent, understandable, and it gets more technical for those who are interested.

Academic recapitulation of carbon cycle etc...
This book is fine as an academic review of the carbon cycle and carbon capture. It's dry academic detached descriptions borders on endorsement of some the worst aspects of geoengineering. The author may be a decent scientist but he has the soul of an engineer. This technology will not save us. The author fails to adequately quantify aspects of emissions additionality and he has little critical understanding of natural climate solutions. This technology will be used as an excuse for continued business as usual. This might be OK, if it could be deployed in time without massive depletion of resources and worsening the carbon burden of the atmosphere as it is built and deployed. In the near term it has attracted massive investment and has been politically endorsed by various leaders. On the surface, it is a desirable compromise and allows emissions to be controlled more gradually or, they secretly hope, not controlled at all. We will simply manage the atmosphere with Big Tech. As an ecologist I find the lack of critical appraisal that dominates this book to be reprehensible.

A rational voice discussing facts instead of rhetoric
It's depressingly rare to find a voice like Herzog's that values truth over personal agenda.

Essential reading on this critical and timely topic -- accessible and concise, as intended
Herzog presents foundational knowledge in an easy-to-read format, on this topic of Carbon Capture, which should play an important role in controlling the impacts of CO2 while allowing for continued use of the world's extensive supply of fossil fuels. He puts forth an objective and technically-sound discussion of the main topic along with supporting material. And, he also poses challenges for policy-makers that should be addressed immediately, while at the same time describing the options they have to choose from. I wanted to read this book because of working in the environmental engineering field focused on groundwater resource management and protection. The book provides a strong basis for understanding what carbon capture involves, whether the reader needs to augment already-gained technical and policy-related knowledge, or to get a first view of the subject.

Thorough and well written
Absolutely perfect: the author deeply knows the topic and, most crucial for an amateur like me, has a clear and easy to understand way of explaining it.Many popular science books are poorly edited in that the author keeps repeating points over and over again - not so here! It's like going for a walk through the topic with an expert guide: no lingering, no getting lost yet at no point are you rushed or unable to keep up - step-by-step you are being guided through the field.

Negative Carbon Emissions
Mr Herzog book is the best summary of Carbon Capture Use & Storage I have read. It is a must for anyone who wants to know the real story and not just reaction without reason.

Thorough yet easy to digest understanding of Carbon Capture tech
I’ve been trying to get a better understanding of climate change as well as potential ways of addressing it. As a firm believer in the power of innovation, I wanted to have a better grasp on carbon capture as a contributor to the overall climate solution. At first, I was concerned this book would be way to difficult to read (as something from MIT can be intimidating) but I could not have been more wrong. The book does a fantastic job at explaining everything in a very simple way. It provides a comprehensive framework of carbon capture and negative emission technologies as well as the politics surrounding them. Concluding with a well balanced outlook of what’s to come.I highly recommend it to anyone looking to understand climate change better. And I will also be checking out the rest of MIT press essentials. Loved it.
