The Inside Tract: Your Good Gut Guide to Great Digestive Health

Great book for those needing relief
I started reading this book as a suggestion from my nutritionist. At the time, I was having stomach issues and I was on the low-fodmap diet. The only issue was that I found myself reducing the types of foods that I was eating to make myself feel better (eliminating the foods that still caused upset). I was down to oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, corn tortillas and grilled chicken as my staples. It wasn't until I read Dr. Mullin's book and tried out Track II on the diet (the book contains three different tracks depending on how bad your intestinal issues are) that I felt much better. It seemed that having fresh, steamed vegetables gave me so much more energy. (If only I had listened to mom.) Further, I did not feel hungry (like I did on the low-fodmap diet). The best part about Dr. Mullin's book for me (beside all of the information about G.I. issues and solutions) is that the diet plans include actual diet menus. For example, it stated what to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, for seven days, on each of the three tracks, with both a spring/summer menu plan and a fall/winter menu plan for all three tracks, which helped me from feeling so overwhelmed when trying to decide what to eat. I just looked at his menu and ate it (and enjoyed it, especially breakfast on Day 2 of the Fall/Winter Menu Plan on Track II which featured autumn spiced soy yogurt parfait - delicious!).I highly recommend this book for those who want to feel good and healthy while they are in the process of figuring out what is going on with their gut!

i'm surprised at teh good reviews of this book
i'm surprised at teh good reviews of this book. It is mostly entertaining in terms of this and that patient's story, but when it comes to diet recomendations, a lot of their recomendations do not match what i've been reading about in other, more research-based books. For example, they recommend getting a lot of fiber when there is no research-based evidence that it helps ibs or constipation. Also, I do not understand why they discourage use of lard, which is a main part of paleo. Also, i was expecting to see mores specific diets based on specific illnesses, but they just have generic diets based on overall severity of gasto symptoms, but to me, this does not seem like a very targeted approach because all of their diets, from the most strict to the least strict one, had either foods that are widely known allergens, or was restricting things without an explanation. Like why is ghee restricted if it has no lactose? This book is not research based and is based mostly on anecdotal evidence from the doctor's clinical practice, but basically what is says can be summed up in one sentence: "try the elimination diet and see what you can tolerate"I was also surprised that they include lentil in the strictest version of the diet which supposedly has the least amount of foods that could be irritants. I found this weird since it has fiber, which is bad for SIBO, and since it is also bad for leaky gut.Basically, I did not see the rationale behind the dietary recommendations int his beeok, based on the various approaches including paleo. At least teh paleo books i've read are based on research and on the latest research we know about the gut.

Highly recommended!
very helpful book. A GI Symptom Assessment Tool is provided to help determine the severity of gut issues and which of the 3 dietary tracks described is most appropriate, given individual symptoms. I especially appreciate the contributions of Kathie Madonna Swift, who clearly lays out suggested menus, recipes and quick tips for each of the 3 diet tracks. Her suggestions include seasonal items so one can use the freshest ingredients. She also includes instructions for adding foods back into the diet after following the elimination phase. This is a very do-able program, thanks to her clear efforts. I provide individual nutrition counseling (MNT) and have successfully used the program provided in this book with individuals diagnosed with Chron's, Celiac Disease, and a variety of forms of IBD. Highly recommended!

Got digestive problems? This book is for you.
I found this book by accident but I'm SO glad I did. I have IBS, had GERD for years, but was still having digestive issues. Wasn't too sure how to go about a proper diet to find the culprits, but this book takes all the work out of that and does it for you. Well written, easy to understand, fascinating information about how our digestive systems really work...and why it's not so much what you EAT, but what you ABSORB from your food that counts. I've been following Track 2 for several days now and feel infinitely better than I have felt in a long time. Apparently I've got some food triggers, and Track 2 removes ALL of the usual suspects. Can't wait to find out what the issue really is when I start adding back in such things as dairy, eggs, wheat, corn...and the like. Comes with meal plans and easy and gut-comforting recipes. Like I said...If you have problems with your digestion, get a copy of this book. It's well worth the time and money.

Kindle version..ugggh
The book is good but the tables are messed up on the kindle, so the chart for the supplements is missing some text and is really a mess. I cannot recommend the kindle version, but the book is really great. Not sure how they do kindle books but they still need work. The book has 3 levels for different levels of messed up stomachs. The whole idea is to stop damaging your gut and, in addition, to take supplements to help heal it.I've skimmed through the book, and a lot I know already, however I was interested in leaky gut and using l-glutamine and zinc carnosine. He recommends digestive enzymes for IBS but I have an ulcer so I cannot take them, but other than that the protocol is the method used for intestinal healing.

Wonderful book - worth buying
Great book if you have digestive issues, IBS IBD Crohns, colitis, GERD and non-digestive issues like Restless legs syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, migraine's, Rosacea, hypothyroidism etc. Our second brain is in our digestive system which is why so many of these seemingly "non-digestive problems" occur which the doctors don't seen to have that much of a handle on. So many of these things can be sorted out with the suggested 3 track eating plans. The information contained in this book is invaluable and it is written by a GI doctor with a definite leaning towards non medical intervention when he has found out that all these diseases, syndromes can be helped by diet, exercise, meditation etc.Thoroughly recommend it to anyone having any of these kind of problems
