We are amongst many people who purchase food service hair nets for their pool-side filters. They are not perfect, but a whole lot better than no filter at all. We find it better to use two nets at the same time, so that very fine debris, which passes through the first net, is caught by the second. If the weather is bad with strong winds, so there's lots of blown debris, we will change both nets every day. If no wind, we can get 2-3 and occasionally 4 days before a change is advisable. The extra cost is low, while the cost of a replacement sand filter is high. Extra fabric in the pool-side filter because of using two nets increases the possibility that a net could float free and pass through to the pool pump (even though we also have a pump side filter). To minimize this risk, we put a small round stone of appropriate weight into the pool-side filter basket after the two new nets are fitted. This holds the nets in place. There are many food service hair nets available and the quality and or effective size tends to change over time. It pays to keep an eye on what you're buying and swap out for another net if you don't like what you are seeing. Too much trouble? Maybe, but there's satisfaction in super clean pool water. Better to use a pool service? Yes, if you can't find the time, provided you are happy to pay and your weekly pool person has high standards.

I use these as skimmer socks in my above ground pool. They are great because they trap bugs and especially cotton from Cottonwood trees. Without the hair nets the cotton eventually gets through the skimmer basket and plugs up the pump filter. These prevent a lot of stuff from getting through. When the cotton is really flying in June they do need to be changed every couple hours because they get clogged up and reduce the flow into the filter.

I bought these hair nets after reading about them on a swimming pool blog. I put them in the pool skimmer on the removable basket and make sure they fit the inside of the basket. The amount of particles these gather is extraordinary!!! Most of those particles would go right through the basket when I didn’t use these. That means going through the filter and poured back in the pool. I’m sure these will extend the life of the filter also. Never can be too safe!

Bought just to better capture more "junk" in skimmer before the pool filter. Skimmers have "tower handle" that must be unscrewed, then this placed, then reinstall the tower handle. It works, but got to be too much hassle. Filter does catch it all anyway, so - at worst - I'll only have to clean the 4 filter cannisters a little more often.

I bought these for my pool to go around my skimmer pot so I didn’t have to keep buying the skimmer socks. This works just as well if not better!

I use these as socks for my pool skimmer and they do a great job at stopping small particles like dirt/sand from getting to my pool filter. It keeps me from having to clean the pool filter as often as I used to. Also it's easy because you just take the old one out, throw it away, and put a new one in in a matter of seconds.

The fact that these are made of mesh and not netting means that they keep out the tiniest of bugs, whether it's fruit flies you're trying to keep off your fresh tomato harvest, or fungus gnats you're trying to keep off your indoor seedlings. The elastic band is great for gripping bowls and pots of various sizes. These also allow airflow which is much better than plastic wrap for both applications.
