cheap zipper broke 2 months
Nice roomy bag, but zippers are cheap. I purchased it in November 2012 and should have returned it right away because the zippers kept sticking. However, I hoped that a $50 book bag would at least make it through the school year. Wrong. The zipper on main compartment broke within 2 months. According to Amazon's return policy, this was outside the return window. A $50 book bag that lasts 2 months and can't be returned? Boo.

I Like High Sierra, Just Not This Style
The backpack itself was not the right style for what I was looking for. The main issue I had with it was the built in computer sleeve. It took up too much space and divided the largest section of the backpack. The covering around the zippers is very odd. It was difficult for me to maneuver and zip and it would have been too annoying for my son to have at school. The quality of the bag was very nice, the material is high quality and the rain shield is an excellent idea. Personally I'd suggest another High Sierra backpack. I had purchased the High Sierra Composite last year for him for school, and I ended up going back and reordering that in another color. That style seems the best for a grade school bag. Also I do have to commend the seller. They responded to my email very quickly and made the return process simple.

Uncomfortable
This pack has the most UNCOMFORTABLE STRAPS I have ever felt in my entire life. The straps are made out of very stiff, rough fabric that rubs horribly along my neck. Even when empty, I felt the urge to rip this thing off as soon as I put it on. I found I could adjust it so it would fit lower on my back and not rub my neck as much, but then the straps didn't lay flat on top of my shoulders. Perhaps this would get better with wear, but I have no intention of keeping it long enough to find out.Straps aside, the backpack seems well made. The pockets are strategically placed. There is tons of room, but the bag doesn't poke out too much when empty. The rain cover seems like it would work well and tucks away easily into the bottom of the bag. This does mean that the bottom of the bag is not flat which I could see being bothersome. Also, this backpack is heavier than most when empty - so if weight is a big concern you might look elsewhere.Overall, for me the straps made it unusable but based on the positive reviews, clearly the strap setup works okay for most people and might even work for me if I was dedicated enough to try to break them in. So despite my returning it, I gave it 3 stars since I believe this could be a great backpack for someone else.

was more usefull than expected
So I originally bought this bag to carry my large lap top, camera, eternal hard drive and what ever else I needed to haul back and forth from work home. It has been absolutely great for that, no complaints at all. have plenty of room of many other things as well such as sandals and a sweater. The weight is distributed nicely and has been a very sturdy.Reciently I was invited to go on a 2 day hike throught the jungle (I live in costa rica) and the only back pack I had was this one. I thought it might be two small at first but I was able to pack very comfortably:1 fleece balket1 mosquito net1 large first aid kit1 pair of sport sandels1 poncho1 change of clothesextra socks and underwearenough food for 2 dayssmall bag with toiletriesa flash light and 1 sweaterI walked for 8 hour the first day and my shoulders were not hurting at all, the weight was very well distributed and the shoulder straps were very comfortable. The only thing was one part of the sternum straps fell off and was lost, but that I believe was because i snagged it on something and did not notice.every one on this trip admired my bag and said it was the perfect size. In the end I was almost disappointed it did not rain, because I really wanted to whip out the awesome rain protection this bag has which I have to say was the feature that won me over when I bought the bag.

Love my HS Access, Much better then Jansport Odyssey 39!
Hi my name is Tess. I used to be a Jansport customer for 21 years. Jansport lost my customer loyalty for the simple fact their products they are producing are not top quality like it used to be and their customer service was a terrible experience this time around. I was not going to accept a product that I did not like or agree with. My boyfriend introduced me to High Sierra. I did some research, looked at reviews and really took my time looking at all the backpacks High Sierra offer. What really proved to me that the High Sierra Access was the bag for me was testing out my boyfriends bag. I used it for 3 days straight and loved it. I carry easily 7 big textbooks for college and I walk from building to building. I had to order my bag from Amazon because the High Sierra website didn't have the color I wanted. I spoke with Laurie in the customer service department because I was a little confused between the pictures, amazon description, and High Sierra. I wanted to make sure I got the right bag. Laurie was so helpful and patient! She really took her time checking all my questions out. Not many people go the extra mile for people especially in Customer Service these days. Laurie definitely did!! Laurie definitely made my mind up that I made a great switch from Jansport to High Sierra!! This bag is the newest style. I love how much space the bag has and the pockets are great! The padding is excellent! Especially if you have to carry a lot! By the way I love the raincoat, now my books and laptop can stay nice and dry (it's happened where my 2 textbooks got wet) I love the red and charcoal color. The bag has 2 main compartments for books, separate zipper for padded laptop and tablet opening, a side zipper to fit lunch small book just about anything, great organizer pocket, front pocket pouch for cell phone and keys with headphone hole, a front pocket for pencils pens,a mesh water bottle pocket and what else could you need... a rain coat that's opens at the bottom of the bag which stays attached! I love my bag! I recommend this High Sierra Access product instead of the Jansport Odyssey!! I had an Odyssey 38 they don't make them like the used to!!Sincerely,Tess
