Gives good value for the price
I bought the Nikon-refurbed camera. The refurb version comes without a user manual. You need the user manual. For instance, you can't even load the batteries without difficulty. There's no marking whatsoever on the camera for which way the batteries go (hint: There are three batteries in a line, then one outlier. The outlier and the middle of the three have "+" up. The other two have "+" down). You can download the user manual from Nikon's site. You can also download PC software from the Nikon site. However, the user agreement that you're required to accept says it's okay for them to snoop and collect information from your PC. I declined, so I never got the Nikon software installed. Windows 8.1 lets you transfer your photos using the (supplied) USB cable without any add-on software. Auto focusing is slooow and not always successful. Red-eye elimination is done via post-processing in the camera. Mode selection is done via a menu. That means it takes some time. Big plus: Camera takes regular AA batteries, not something proprietary. Obviously, the large zoom range is a major feature. You can set exposure compensation to adjust the resulting picture. It doesn't work with flash. I wanted to brighten up a flash picture, so I re-took it with compensation. The result was identical. They say you need a tripod for max zoom. They're right: their stabilization isn't up to the task. I tried bracing against a surface, but it wasn't good enough. A completely stable setup gave me a sharp max-zoom picture, proving it was shake, not lens quality or focus that was the problem. The SOFT mode selection choice is misleading. It gives you a submenu where only one of the choices is SOFT. There are useful non-soft choices in that submenu. One of them is the very useful choice: Backlighting. This is also misleading. If you select YES under Backlighting, it's designed to handle high contrast range pictures. It takes one "normal" picture and multiple temporary pictures. It merges them and adjusts to give an adjusted contrast picture that it saves after the "normal" one. In my test shots, it did a pretty good job. Quality of my test pictures was fine. If you consider this to be a big point-and-shoot camera rather than a near-SLR, you'll probably be content with this camera.

Refurbished camera is missing all accessories
This was a refurbished camera that came in a generic box. It did not come with all the accessories or user manual. Just the camera in a plastic bag. I'm thinking about returning it. This is my first Nikon camera and I've already had a sour taste in my mouth. The description said this "The product ships with "relevant accessories", a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic white or brown box. Accessories may be generic and not directly from the manufacturer." Missing the following: Four LR6/L40 (AA- size) alkaline batteries UC-E16 USB Cable AN-CP21 Strap LC- CP31 Lens Cap Sad Customer : (

Fast to focus, exposes accurately and has a simple control layout. Easy to learn and operate. Mega zoom but not for sports.
Ease of use and cost make this a 4.5 Star camera. Not a pro-sumer camera. Not a sports camera. But a fast focus simple control layout. My son is going from cell phone and small PNS to DSLR in a year. 1. The Nikon L840 is a great grab and shoot, budget camera. 2.Delivers very nice photos at lower ISO. Glamour mode and touch ups are very flattering. 3. Night shots on a tripod outside do okay. 4. The zoom on this camera is a Beast reach. You can get more. But you'll pay more with other cameras. 5. Not sure what he's framing, there a cool snap back button.to see the object... aim.. release the button...and click. 6. The select-able scene settings are useful and practical. Panorama is fun!! 7. This camera shots on the soft side. 8. And that's fine, this is where you get to learn the camera nuances. 9. We don't do a lot of post editing with PNS', we post to Instagram. The "WiFi" works fine. 10. The Nikon Coolpix L840 is a bare-bones travel zoom point-and-shoot. It has a 38x zoom lens, with a 16-megapixel sensor, and a simplistic control scheme. Not only does this camera produce decent photos and video considering its price, there's nothing cluttering the experience. Uses 4 AA batteries.

Not a bad camera. I bought it as a backup to ...
Not a bad camera. I bought it as a backup to my big Canon with is for repair when a cow bit the lens. This is a refurbished camera and came with no manual, but that is one you can download on the net. Under extremely bright conditions it is always overexposed despite setting the camera to maximum darkness. Also no manual setting. if you like to do your own settings such as exposure time, a range of ISO other than the very limited ranges available.Runs on 4 AA alkaline batteries and gets about 150-200 images per set. If you plan on using this camera a lot I recommend getting rechargeable lithiums and a charger. In macro mode it gives very good close ups. The 38X optical zoom is great. I can recommend this a good camera for general portrait and landscape use. It will take a while to learn what this camera is capable of so download the manual. I will keep it a a back up. Oh one other thing, there is no peep sight, just the LCD screen which when outside on a bright day cane be hard to see the screen.

Cool camera for general people.
I bought this item as a used one sold from amazon warehouse. I was first a little bit nervous about the clarity of the lens as it was a unused one. However, when the item finally arrived my doorstep, to my utter exclamation, i found it almost new as a product. The lens was totally clear, the body was clean without any scratch. I think the previous user didnt use that too much. Now, let us talk about the picture quality. Let me be frank, it is not a DSLR camera! yes, and so, do not expect a super duper nice picture from it. This camera is very good for people who takes picture occasionally and are not photography fanatics. Most people want a camera which is better than a cell phone camera and easy to use. This is this camera. it is point and shoot. you point to the object and shoot it. it can make the adjustment if you put it into auto mode. I found the auto mode is the best way for a normal person for daily use. if you open the pictures in your PC, you won't find any bad result from it. the flash of the camera is good for again a normal person, not for an enthusiastic person in photography. If you print the pictures you won't be disappointed. The night pictures depend on the settings and the flash. The menus in the camera are basic Nikon menus and to me it is enough. To some, it is not enough. Again, it a point and shoot camera and for general people. Battery: it has not rechargeable builtin battery. You ahve to use AA batteries. you can buy rechargeable AA batteries and a charger from amazon.

What have I been doing with my life??!?? Best starter cam of life!
LOOOOOOOOOOVE THUS CAMERA!!! Still getting use to the functions but my word what have I been doing with my life. I'm a YouTuber and for the past 3 yrs I've filmed all my vids Via my Iphone. I started with the iPhone4 when I started my channel and was last using my iphone 5 and sometimes my 6. My vids were great and pics beautiful but man o man once you get a real camera it's like MAGIC my vids are so vivid and clear and pictures so crisp and bold. I love my IPhone but I'm in love with my Nikon. There are just some things a camera does better than a camer phone. I've had my cam for 3 weeks and have no issues it came quick and packed nice. I will update later once I've played around a little more and gotten a hang of some of the more advance settings. I will update with pics as well. The Camera Looks brand spanking new too.

Great Camera! Like the Wifi
Great camera at an even better price. The wifi seemed to be a bit clunky and awkward to set up. However once set it works great. Cons: 1. No owners manual. I did download a digital copy from Nikon's wed site. ( Still wish I had a physical copy) 2. You have to manually raise the flash. It does not automatically "pop up" like on our other Nikon DSLR camera. Pros: 1.Great clear photos 2.Great clear video with excellent sound 3. Light weight but feels well built (typical Nikon)
