Is this the God I know?
The scholarship of languages and the hermeneutics of interpretation comes together in this series of reflections on the inadequacy of our human vocabulary to describe the God of the Bible. Language limps however it is what we have. The author has interesting insights especially in the second half of the book where the paradoxes of the Bible are investigated - God's wrath and God's mercy; the issue of suffering especially of good folk; God's all knowing and all powerful and human freedom. This book is a good choice for small group discussion of one's faith and the bsis for that faith.

I would recommend it to all who are hoping to see God ...
How Human is God? by Mark S. Smith, paperback, is a carefully written description of God as we perceive the Supreme Being or as we humans with limited imagination portray him. Mr. Smith introduces a new method of viewing God, one that takes in the spiritual, biblical commentary of the Jewish bible as well as the later Christian bibler, an extension of the Jewish prophets, some of whom claimed to have seen God. To those who are interested or curious, this is a remarkable book and a seemingly short book in number of pages.. I would recommend it to all who are hoping to see God one day. Thanks, A.M. Seidler, S.F., Ca.

Rather interesting to someone who is still trying to figure ...
Rather interesting to someone who is still trying to figure out WHO and WHAT GOD is. Written from a Christian viewpoint, but explores the Hebrew Scriptures for most of the answers, which is the position I want to explore. Worth reading.

For Inquiring Minds to Consider
Dr. Smith is insightful, provocative in some respects but invites a healthy discussion.H. Flemings, professor of Hebrew Language

How God relates to humans
Mark Smith has done a credible job of showing some of the human attributes of God in this easy to read book from Liturgical Press.Subjects covered include the anger of God, (Why does God seem angry?) suffering, Satan, and creation. Chapter 4, DOES GOD IN THE BIBLE HAVE GENDER OR SEXUALITY? is surprisingly one of the best in the book.I think the author only makes one mistake. At one point he writes that.. "people who don't sin don't perish." This just doesn't seem to make sense for the simple reason that all human beings sin. God, in the human man Jesus, is the only person to have never sinned.Other than that, another good resource from Liturgical Press exploring the human side of the Almighty.
