The Family Lesson a Day: The Laws of Speech With Stories and Parable for All Ages

If I could only own 5 books, this would be one of them. I have on many occasions cringed over something I said and wished I had more self control over what comes out of my mouth. This book rearranged my thinking about the deeply important issue of speech and it's impact on my life. Naturally, my change impacted my children's speech habits, too, resulting in uplifted lives for all of us.

I received this book just before Rosh Hashanah last year. I LOVE it! It teaches the reader how to be a mentsch, a proper person, by advising one on the laws of following Shmiras Ha Loshon - guarding the tongue - and advising against Loshon Hora - evil speech. Too often, especially over the past few years in this country, many people have disregarded the unwritten, yet innately understood, laws of common civilized human discourse. It seems that many people in this country dehumanize and belittle others with their own bigoted views (in my humble opinion). It would do good for all, Jews as well as non-Jews, to read this book.The book, as it's title suggests, is not meant to be read from cover to cover. Each day's lesson is displayed over two pages, one dealing with Halacha pertaining to proper speech, and the other dealing with an anecdote from the Tanach, Talmud, or some other parable that further illustrate the Chofetz Chaim's concepts and laws of proper speech. I'm already on my second reading.Five out of five stars. Everyone should read this book and learn how to be respectful, make peace and generally act like a mentsch.

I like this book very much. I'm going to have to read it a few times to get all the deep meanings of your thoughts and attitudes how to make them more blessed and healthy and positive. Recommend this book.

Beautifully written and a real eye opener to read. Second time I ordered this and I kept one and gave one away. For a truly serious spiritual growth person, this is another great book to understand the power of our words for both good or evil!

I believe I was lead to this book by Divine influence and it was exactly what I need to be working with. I love this book... I think if I was stranded on a deserted island and could only take three books it would be on the list.

The Chofetz Chaim really does do a good job of explaining the laws of speech. It is so important that we understand when to speak, how to speak, and when to hold our tongues. If you haven't studied this book, then you don't stand a chance. Once you've read this book, then you can begin to examine you speech day by day against what the Chofetz Chaim teaches. This is the starting point for improving your speech. Everyone should read this book.

This book is an excellent book with practical ways to watch how we speak to and about others as well was how to listen to others without doing hard to ourself or others. There is a message for each day that helps keeps us focused on how God's plan for our speach and reasoning should be. I have really enjoyed reading the daily portion's and have learned how the things we do or say that seem little or unimportant can really have a big impact on how we react or perceive things. I would definately recommend this book to anyone that is trying to seek truth and be the best person God wants us to be.

The message in this book has made me focus more about what I say. It has a daily reading and it's easily understood. five stars

great lessons

This book has such important teachings about proper speech and the devastating effects of negative speech. Should be required reading by people of all faiths.

The book came as expected, with one minor surprise... Although it is book based on Jewish concepts of positive speech, I found included an insert about joining the Church of Jesus Christ. Thought that was a bit odd!
