Amazing Numbers in Biology
W**E
so diverse an assortment
I am dubious that this is a book that one necessarily reads. But, somehow, Flindt has gathered from diverse sources a collection of statistics about biology that many readers would be totally unaware of. Take, for instance, a table of urine production in various mammals. We, humans, excrete about 1 to 1.6 liters/day. While a horse is far more copious, at 6 to 10 liters/day.Maybe you did know this, especially if you came from a farm. But what about the number of taste buds of some vertebrates. We have 9000. While a bat has only 800, and a cat shark has 100 000. And snakes have none.Perhaps the book really belongs with almanacs.
