Montezuma's Absolute Black, 100% Cocoa, Dark Chocolate With Almonds

This is really nice, good quality 100% cocoa choccy! I opted for the one with almonds and it’s delicious. What’s also important to many people, including myself as a pre-diabetic, is that this is very low sugar and saturated fat. So ideal for a healthy treat! The bar is also great value at £3 a bar. In fact cheaper than many you’ll find in the supermarket. Try something big different to the usual big brands, and give this a whirl, you won’t regret it ! Thumbs up from me !

Superb quality and great taste

Really good, but don’t let children near it. My grandson asked for a piece and nearly choked with the shock (no sugar and deep dark chocolate taste). Just as well he didn’t like it as I don’t want to share :-)

This item arrived very promptly and was decently packaged (nothing fancy - just the black and white cardboard design pictured here). Pleasantly, the chocolate did not taste bitter as was anticipated despite the "darkest dark... don't say we didn't warn you" type warnings! I must commend the very affordable pricing (as dark chocolate often costs a small fortune and isn't typically available via mainstream stores). Commendable also are the efforts towards sustainability. With all that said, I just wish they had a range of 100% dark chocolate with more complex notes and fruity hints e.g. the Madagascar type chocolate bars. Although this was rather mono-tone and boring in taste, for some reason it was still a bit more-ish.

High cocoa content chocolate i.e. over 85% is thought to have many proposed health benefits. It is said to improve a person's mood and to optimise the gut biome. I don't know for a fact if this is medically true or not, but I thought it was worth giving it a try as I'm a chocoholic who recently suffered a couple of mini-strokes! The taste is somewhat bitter when you first upgrade from eating the regular dark chocolates you can buy in the shops. However, if you persevere and eat just a couple of squares each day, you will soon become accustomed to its unique, strong flavour. Having no added sugar, it is unlikely to spike your blood-sugar levels or interfere with your insulin levels - a great bonus if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic. My first batch of Montezuma chocolate was simply the original, plain, dark variety. However, I have invested in some different flavours this time around including the almond and orange varieties. So far I have enjoyed every one of them! As I said earlier, it is better to have just a couple of small squares at a time to satisfy your chocolate craving. If you have substantially more you may find you get bad headaches and even constipation. The chocolate is rather expensive, but I think the potential health benefits outweigh the cost. I, for one, will not be reverting to the mass produced, sugar-laden bars of chocolate any day soon.

Why did you choose this product over others?: I wanted to see what this was like because my mother has type 2 diabetes and loves dark chocolate, usually the 85% cocoa sort. Neither she nor I found this edible, though, and it's not just the weird dichotomy between (pungent) chocolate flavour with absolutely no sweetness - I expected that, after all. No, it was also the texture, dry and crumbly, almost powdery, it was more like eating chocolate flavoured compressed sawdust, with an occasional small lump of something harder and tasteless, presumably they were supposed to be the almonds. There were no redeeming features to this either in flavour, which is obnoxiously strong, or texture. Maybe it could be used successfully to cook with. But if you normally like a smooth rich chocolate, I'd advise you to steer clear.

Fantastic chocolate. So much healthier without all the sugar! Without the sugar, you can really taste the chocolate - delicious. This is a chocolate bar where you can savour and enjoy each square rather than blinking and it's gone. My only disappointment is that it is not organic.

Delicious and perfect as im diabetic

I love this chocolate bar. I am allergic to sugar so this is perfect. It has the ideal bitter taste of cocoa and it leaves a wonderful flavor in the mouth. Unfortunately it’s a bit expensive so I’m not buying it all the time but I do love it!

Purchased on 03/17/22 and received the bar with Best Before 02/08/22. The chocolate has a white film.
