Fast, smart looking and scalable. A gem of a NAS
Really good product and fast. However, you'll have to configure it (as with any NAS really) carefully if you want the speed and redundancy. How you configure it will determine performance but out of the box without added RAM and 4 x 6tb Seagate Iron Wolf hard drives in a RAID 10 configuration, this NAS is very responsive. The DSM software that comes with it is a joy to use and has loads of features to turn it into a mail server, vpn server, CRM server and a plethora of other features. It'll even backup your 365 account (it won't backup a business oneDrive account if it's associated with Sharepoint).Encryption is possible but shared, encrypted drives tend to dismount and need re-mounting unless you add a USB stick to act as a key manager.I've been installing and configuring Synology NAS devices for about 7 years now and this is a very smart option if huge storage isn't an issue.

Solid Performance with 4 Micron SSD’s, fast, reliable file server.
Used as file server in 20 Mac small business with 4 Micron 2Tb SATA SSD’s in a raid 10 configuration. Absolutely no complaints. Redundant power supplies important to me, as is the NIC adapter teaming to boost network access. Synology DSM is a breeze compared to old Dell windows active directory server it replaced, solid backup options on and off-site, easy to setup and after 1 year absolutely reliable so far. I’ll buy another to setup on 2nd site to mirror data with DSM. Don’t hesitate on using SSD’s it setup itself with no extra configuration at all, except to specify Raid 10. For maintenance I manually reboot it occasionally and take data snapshots, overall fast and reliable. For what it’s worth I used 4 Micron 1100 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-inch MTFDDAK2T0TBN-1AR1ZABYY with no issues but there are likely better options today for the money.

Great NAS Solution, Easy Migration
I bought this RS818+ as a replacement to a DS415+ PSU failure. I was apprehensive that the volumes would not be recognized, but the DSM software is much smarter than that. I put all the drives into the RS818+ and the DSM started up with the question of Migration or Full Install. I chose the Migration, and all my files and settings were transferred. I logged in with no problems. I am fully capable again.Product experience:All the MACs are listed on the top of the unit. This made it easy for me to put them into my IP-MAC binding database. The top cover is easily removable (4 screws) to access the RAM modules for upgrade.Software migration was an easy step, less than 10 minutes.Mounting hardware included, very sturdy; will buy the sliding rails later.All-in-all, very positive experience. Everything is working as it should. Highly recommend this RackStation.

Very unreliable. Two RMAs in 14 months.
I initially ordered this unit in January 2018. I had been a long time QNAP fan, but heard so much about Synology software and how easy and powerful the software features were. I have to say, I agree. Although I enjoy the direct access to very powerful features/information on the QNAP, the Synology had much slicker feature rich software. HOWEVER... hardware wise, it has been a big disappointment. In June 2018, it went dead. Tech support was GREAT!!! They were fairly quick to help narrow down the problem. We did it through the ticketing/email system on the Synology site. It took a little over a week of going back and forth before they finally concluded we needed to do an RMA. Given I wanted a replacement quickly, I opted for an Advanced RMA (Credit Card upfront, and they ship you the replacement unit (bench tested, but probably re-furbished, I saw small signs of evidence that lead me to believe it was NOT NEW). It worked... and I was happy... until today (2019.03.18). During the day, I got a couple of alerts that the unit shut down improperly. I thought nothing of it, until I got home, tried to access it, and it was unreachable. Went to see it.... 'same thing, 9 months later'..... alternating flashing green power light and amber/alert light. Removed drives, disconnected everything but power, plugged power back in. after 10 mins, no change. RMA .... AGAIN. So disappointed. I was expecting much better reliability. Great customer service, but it's needed, because the reliability requires you to have that kind of service to try to retain your customers.
