The Nursing Mother's Guide to Weaning - Revised: How to Bring Breastfeeding to a Gentle Close, and How to Decide When the Time Is Right

A Good Source of Info on Weaning and Weaning Techniques
This book begins with a fascinating chapter on the history and sociology of Breastfeeding and Weaning [and the politics as well!]. I found that very interesting. More than 90 pages of the book are devoted to how to wean a baby who is less than 12 months old - which might be helpful to many moms, but is useless to anyone who is nursing a baby older than that. I found the book to be VERY honest and direct on both the pros and cons of weaning in each age category [0-4 mos, 5-12 mos, 1-2 yrs, 3 and older]. The author was very supportive of a mother's wish to wean [or not], regardless of her reasons and gave the facts about the benefits and costs of the decision in a very forthright and non-judgemental fashion. She included a huge number of practical tips on weaning in different situations and for different reasons. She offered information on every choice available without judgement - including some methods condemned by most Breastfeeding Advocates - such as weaning by "abandonment", applying disgusting or pain-inducing substances to the breast to traumatize the baby out of wanting to nurse, and weaning by frightening the baby. I didn't care for those methods, but she was certainly honest and thorough on ALL the options available. She gave many, many tips on methods that might be more healthy for the baby as well, and I felt the book was very complete.

Not Very Practical
I am really disappointed. I was hoping for more of a detailed how-to and/or more options & ideas for how to wean practically. For example, I have an 11 month old that I am trying to night wean (just night wean - I’m so tired of nursing him now more often than I did as a newborn!) and there was nothing on it. The age ranges are very broad and it seems to have an all-or-nothing approach for older babies/toddlers. Very frustrating. I’m returning it. It does have good info on breastfeeding itself, but I was looking for how to back off with an older baby. I don’t need to be convinced to breastfeed my baby.

Good advice with a little guilt
It's nice to have a guide to weaning that's written for toddlers (and older). The standard advice it's too simple to apply to my situation anyway, so I needed a little more detail and more suggestions. My only complaint with this book is it seemed to push for continuing nursing in most situations, but I bought it because I am ready to wean my daughter. The underlying sentiment seemed to be "don't stop now, even if you want to, if you change your mindset breastfeeding will continue to be ok."

Very informative and helpful
This book is great to help a woman learn about the history of breastfeeding and weaning babies. It also gives lots of suggestions to help you decide when to wean your baby as well as a few tactics. I would have given it 5 stars, but it didn't have any suggestions for specific weaning plans. I guess I was hoping and looking for charts, timetables, and schedules. This isn't a guide in that way. It's not specific, just generally helpful.

Not a "How To" book
Dang! Despite the other reviews (which you should read because I share their thoughts and wont repeat them here), I purchased this book, mainly because I love the author's other books, and based on the reviews here at Amazon.com, I thought I might like it. I was planning to nurse until I could not possibly do so anymore. However, there are really no tips on how to wean, nor how to maintain extended nursing. This book is mainly about why extended nursing is good for your child. That is what the name of this book should have been. Here are just some of the questions I was looking to be answered by this book. None of them were really addressed.1. Which nursing sessions should I drop as my baby gets older2. Do I give him cows milk AT ALL while I'm nursing and yet weaning?3. Since I'm not producing as much milk as I used to, do I water down the milk I have? Do I supplement with water, juice, etc?4. How much liquids do I need to give my baby as I'm starting to wean?5. What do I do when the child wants to nurse?6. How do I know if my child really wants to nurse? So often he's content throughout the day. Does that mean I don't nurse at a regularly scheduled session?7. How much is milk do mother's typically produce during the weaning process?8. What is normal milk production for a working mother (such as myself)? How much is normal to still be pumping? This book is great if you want to learn why to continue to nurse past 1 or 2 years; not how to nurse, just why it's great to nurse that long.

Great book, sounds like advice from a trusted maternal-type friend.
This is a great book. I love how the overall tone of the book is encouraging, almost sounds like advise coming from a trusted maternal-type friend. I'm still nursing my 25 month old son and am aiming to wean him gently by the time he turns 3. We haven't started yet but this book has definitely been a good source of information for our weaning journey. Highly recommended!

Only thing this book is good for is guilt-tripping moms
This book lacks sensitivity or empathy towards mothers, especially those who are weaning for medical reasons or other serious issues that prevent breast feeding. It’s full of condescending and snide digs at anyone choosing to wean which makes no sense, seeing as most everyone reading the book likely has already made their decision to do so.If you’re unable to breastfeed and already feeling bad about giving formula, this book will kick you while you’re down and make you feel like the worst mom in the world. Do not recommend.

Good information on nursing and weaning
Although this book isn't necessarily only about weaning (as other reviewers have mentioned), it does offer a good insight into nursing, its history and into weaning at various stages in a child's life. I would have preferred to have more detailed info for weaning a two and a half year old. The one to two year olds are treated in the same chapter, then the over three year olds in the following chapter. As it is very difficult to find information on weaning older children, I felt that there is a vast difference between weaning a one or a two year old or even a two and a half year old. Also, I have to wean her while nursing a six month old baby, so it's even harder on the toddler. There is no information about how you could deal with this tandem nursing situation. Nevertheless, a good book!
