What is the optimal way to hold these reading blocks? From the end balls? Are the blocks supposed to be loose or tight?

Great question! The best way to hold the reading blocks is to hold two adjacent blocks in place with one hand while the other hand turns the remaining block. Holding the blocks like this will keep them in place while children create new words. While the rods can be held by the end balls, the end balls are mainly designed to keep the blocks together on the rod. Since our blocks are made with completely solid wood, versus MDF or plastic, there will be natural variations to the cut of each individual block and how it fits together with its partnering blocks.

*Note we have tried to minimize the number of nonsense words created by the letter combinations, however, they do exist. This is to be expected and is a great chance for children to practice their spelling and differentiate between real words and nonsense words.

Our flashcards feature 30 of these words (6 for each the 5 vowels). Each vowel has a color-coded side to help children pick up on vowel patterns. The flip side is plain with just the picture to help children to independently create the word then check their work when they flip the card over.
