Q: my motor has 2 wires. will this 3 wire work on my unit?

Should. One is a ground wire, one makes it go up and the other makes it go down.

Q: Will this fit up to a 1974 Johnson 85 with a single cylinder power lift?

As long as the cylinder has two ports it should. One for raising and one for lowering. You would most likely need to drill new holes in the motor mounting bracket to mount this unit. Also, make sure that you are purchasing the right pump for this assembly. You will also most likely need to fit new brake lines. The type of fittings for the cylinder side of the brake lines may not be found anymore so you would have to use couplers to utilize the original fittings on the cylinder side. The pump side will be inverted flare fittings. Everything I described is what I did to replace the entire assembly on my 1978 75hp Evinrude. It works great.
