How do you update the firmware? I downloaded it using my pc, followed directions (pressed zoom left + playback button) and nothing happens.

The trick is to do it with the camera OFF: press the zoom button to the left and press the play button at the same time. Hold it for a second or two. This should bring up the firmware upgrade instructions on the camera's screen. Just did it on my new camera a minute ago, after being stuck for a while and downloading the firmware about five times.

Does anyone know how to enable sound recording when zooming in/out when taking a video? Every time I take a video and zoom, the sound cuts out :(

Can you upload to social media using the Wifi without going through a smart phone?

This model allows direct upload to Facebook, Picasa, YouTube, and Dropbox. You can also enter in an email address to email photos. You need to have access to a WiFi hotspot for any of these methods to work.

Has anyone found a good-fitting case for this?

No, you do need the cable. Wifi only goes to the phone, Dropbox, and email, and email had what was a 10 picture limit (plus it didn't work yet) and a 30-second limit for video, plus you have to check each picture off. The other two options I think have those limits too. . If you want to move all your pictures to your computer in one shot, you need a cable. Then it's easy. (though strangely my first two cables didn't work.)
