Handlebar reach is too far for a smaller person
For the price, this is a decent bike.I bought it (in white) for my 9yr old daughter. It is her first "big kid's" bike. The white with pink accented decals fits the "girl" style fine.. though I don't know why the listing says "boys".The drop-style top tube allows for easy on and off.I'd give it 5 starts except..The brakes and shifters needed to be reinstalled to work properly. Shifters were upside down on wrong ends of the bar. That force brake levers way too far down to work with smaller hands.Be prepared to take this bike to a shop and have a once over before you put your kid on it and find out the hard way that some things may not be in tune.. And that may not be cheap.Also.. this is a 24" wheel bike.. By definition it is designed for smaller bodies. Why Mongoose puts a full reach handle bar stem on this.. and a full size grownup's-butt seat on it.. is beyond me. This forces a smaller person to have to reach WAY out to get hands in position and its an uncomfortable (and unsafe) position to ride in.. more akin to a track bike or a triathletes lower "aero" position.A full size adult might fit the seat to handlebar distance.. but a full size adult would go to a 26" wheel (or larger) frame.Mongoose is not the only company that makes this mistake.. Have seen it on many mid to low end bikes.Simply not thought thru well enough. And yet the answers so simple. So I swapped the handle bar stem for a much shorter reach one I had in my spare parts box and I reversed the seat clamp mount. That shortened the overall reach by about 6"(1) and now my 9yr old rides comfortably and safely.Summary. Great kids bike in terms of build and components in terms of price.. but will need considerable work to work safely and properly, and that balances out any price savings.

Great bike, strong frame, good tread on tires
This is the next size up for my 10 year old to grow into. He can just touch the ground on his tiptoes, so there is lots of room to grow. This is a nice solid frame bike with great tread tires and an easy shift throttle control gear selectors. Assembly took about 20 minutes out of the box. The color is a bright green and makes it easy to see. I also bought him LED lights that go around the spokes of the wheels so the bike looks just as good at night as it does durning the day. There are two Preset screws/holes on the inside of the frame to mount a water bottle holder. I also purchased a tire pump and there's enough room to mount it under the seat post. I great bike, a great price, and quick shipping. Just a note that there is a picture and manufacturer name on the box when it ships, so if this is going to be a surprise, make sure you're ready for the delivery so you can redirect your little one out of the room.

Worth the money
This is a great bike. We are a biking family, I have 5 bikes myself and everyone else has at least one. This is my youngest son’s 3rd bike. He is 11 and 54” tall. I searched through many options to find this one.I was concerned about quality, durability and ease of use (hand brake are not to hard to squeeze...)This has turned out to be a great purchase for the price.

My 10 year old LOVES this bike
My 10 year old son is tall for his age and has outgrown his BMX bike so we moved him up to this mountain bike. He's getting used to all the gears and hand brakes (not using pedals as brakes) but this bike is perfect for him. Terrific value for a sweet looking bike! I did have it assembled at a bike shop and I highly recommend that.

Impossible to Assemble
Nice looking bike. My son hasn’t ridden it yet because (after 15 hours spent trying to get the brakes to work correctly and figure out why the gears weren’t shifting right, I finally gave up and) its at a Repair Shop now where we’ll pay a minimum of $68 for a once-over. Three weeks of wishing he could ride the bike that was supposed to be an easy assembly and turned into a disaster makes this a disappointment all around. I’d try a different bike if I had it to do over.

Daily Transportation
As long as your probably going to want to buy a new saddle I also recommend purchasing new tires with Kevlar - forget the slime. When you assemble the handle bars follow the cable guides under the cross bar or it may appear one of the cables is crossed over on the wrong side. You always have to replace the saddle on an inexpensive bicycle. When it comes to "getting what you paid for", I give this bike five stars. Keep in mind I've yet to test it on the Yosemite Loop trail 4.5 miles on my way to work, hopefully the chain is strong enough - if not then four stars.Update: 06/11/18. The front derailleur can not be adjusted square or it will run into the tire. Good Luck.

Not for typical boys and daily riding.
If buying for a preteen or teen boy (who’s hard on things), I wouldn’t suggest this. Bought for my 10 year old and it didn’t even last 2 years. Could be the way he is on things or could be the quality of this bike or maybe a mixture of both.Gears broke within the first year (stuck on same gear after that). Things like that.
