Question 1

do these matches contain sulphur? Looking for matches with sulphur in them.

Accepted Answer

Found the following information on the internet Match heads of safety matches contain sulfur (sometimes antimony III sulfide) and oxidizing agents (usually potassium chlorate), with powdered glass, colorants, fillers, and a binder made of glue and starch. The striking surface consists of powdered glass or silica (sand), red phosphorus, binder, and filler. When you strike a safety match, the glass-on-glass friction generates heat, converting a small amount of red phosphorus to white phosphorus vapor.White phosphorus spontaneously ignites, decomposing potassium chlorate and liberating oxygen. At this point, the sulfur starts to burn, which ignites the wood of the match. The match head is coated with paraffin wax so the flame burns into the stick. The wood of a match is special, too. Match sticks are soaked in an ammonium phosphate solution that reduces afterglow when the flame goes out. Match heads are commonly red. This isn't the natural color of the chemicals. Instead, red dye is added to the tip of the match to indicate it's the end that catches on fire.

Question 2

How well would these work for pipe smoking?

Accepted Answer

I've smoked a pipe for many decades and found these are the best matches for lighting a pipe (and cigars as well). They are a little more expensive than the regular supermarket brands, but well worth it! They almost never break, always light on first strike, burn slower and don't have any odor when first lite. I also love the retro box design! Next spring think I'll also try the kitchen size to use with the BBQ grill!

Question 3

what are the dimensions of the box?

Accepted Answer

Standard small matchbox: 2inches long, 1-1/4 inches wide X 1/2 inch high. Quality of matches is very good, by the way.

Question 4

What does two strikes per box mean?

Accepted Answer

You can strike the match on either side of the box.
