It works, and it's easy to get rid of the dead rat without touching it.
I've tried different catch & release traps, but the rats living in my attic were way too smart to trigger them. I checked into ultrasonic rodent repelling systems, but none of them have been scientifically proven to work. I didn't want to kill them (I used to have rats as pets), but they had to go. Poison is out because the rat goes somewhere else to die, and may rot and attract insects and generate decay odors. Glue traps were out because they are unimaginably cruel to the animal, forcing a slow and miserable death by dehydration and starvation. So, a snap trap was the only other solution. The old wood and spring traps have been around for nearly 200 years and are fairly inexpensive, but it is difficult to remove the dead rat without touching it, meaning the trap often gets tossed out with the dead rat. I wanted a snap trap that was easy to use, and easy to reuse. There are lots of bad snap traps, and many mouse traps that are listed as also working for rats, but they don't. Only the Tomcat brand came up in my searches as being universally recommended, so I bought six of them. I've been catching a rat each day since I got them. When the trap is triggered, the jaws come down with great force, and their serrated edges ensure a quick death with minimal suffering. This trap is the real thing. It works well and is very easy to use.One more thing: Be sure to get "natural" peanut butter, the stuff with some separated oil on top that needs to be stirred before each use. I had first tried some national brand homogenized stuff that had so many additives and sugar that the rats actually avoided it. Natural unsalted peanut butter works amazingly well.

Caught tow rats in one trap.
could not believe the big rat I trapped the first night.second nightl oned it to a friend down from us and I set the trap with peanut butter and she caught 2 rats that evening in the same traat the same time. I just do not know how to get the photo off my phone. It is incredible!so powerful and easy to use as I have very little muscle power and so loud when it goes off. The bonsu is the rats are killed instantly. Thank you thank you!

Great product
I love this product. It is very convenient to use and works extremely well. I live near a lake and have a problem with rats periodically. I had an extermination company monitoring my property but that waws expensive. I did a much better job catching rats and disposing them myself at a much cheaper rate. These traps are much more humane than the sticky paper which should be banned. Kills rats instantly.. You do not have to touch the rat to dispose it. Just release lever and rat falls out into trash.

As advertised!
I live in Hawaii in a rental. The owner had the mango tree trimmed. Apparently, rats live in the tree tops. They found their way into the attic. Got 2 large ones and 3 smaller ones. This is one of the smaller ones. I tried the peppermint oil to keep them away, but all it did was make my house smell like Christmas. These traps really work. I would have given it 5 stars, but I found the other traps were still intact, but the bait trap filled with peanut butter was empty. I like the ease of use and I feel it is humane since it snaps rather quickly that I feel they die instantly.

Amazing traps for the uninitiated
This is how it all started. My wife has a good heart, she picked up a nestling from a parking lot. We later learned that it’s not a good idea to pick them up, but she wanted to give the poor animal a chance in life. She gave him a place to sleep and feed him everyday until one morning she didn’t hear him as usual. We kept the bird in our outdoor and meshed covered porch. She saw blood and feather spread around. I went outside to find out the poor bird was eaten, we suspected an iguana, never a rat. It didn’t cross my mind, “I haven’t seen a rat in all these years living here” I thought. We live in a community that has a good sized natural environment close to us, so maybe it was rats.It wasn’t until a after couple of weeks later that I found out. I was alone at home, it was 3 am and i heard a strange sound. It was the rats eating the bird food we left in the porch. Now we know these need to be in containers and not left outside in the open. I also discovered that there were two of them. I’m not afraid of the beasts but also know I should not get too close to them. I gave them a good scare and they ran away. They have now eaten a bird and food from us. I knew now that I should prepare because they will come back for more.Next day, I got the message that my traps will arrive a day later even though I was told they will arrive today. So, I left work early enough to clean the mess and then head to Home Depot to buy these. When I returned it was about to get dark so I read again the reviews that had tips on using dog food and peanut butter. I smeared peanut butter in the triggering plate too. I also pushed the plate just a little bit because they have a small dead zone before triggering. I put these traps in the places they run around, close to walls. I also used a couple of glue traps just in case. It was around 7 pm. Then I went to my things. I knew they will come back.I went to bed around 10 pm and at 11:30pm I heard some snapping sound and then the animal started moving around, struggling with the trap, I could here a sort of cry with a plastic sound, similar to a plastic toy hitting around with the floor. These kept going for about 2-3 minutes and then it all got quiet. I then went to take a look, and saw one dead rat with his head trapped, it died by suffocation. But saw the other rat too, it quickly hid when he saw me and I knew it was scared. I also saw that the other trap was still there close to him and not triggered yet. So I went back to sleep. 2-3 hours later, I then woke up again to another snapping sound but this time no struggle was heard. I knew then that my vengeance was complete. I woke up next day to see them both dead close to each other, they had it coming. I think the worst part was to get rid of their bodies. In the end, these traps work. Just follow the tips I did which I got from other reviewers. They are amazing, they will get the job done.

Amazing trap!!!!
I bought this trap immediately after I found out I had a mouse in my home. I set it up the very same night I got it. And the next morning the rat was caught! It's very strong and fully effective. To attract the the mouse I put peanut butter and a tortilla chip in the center. I got that I idea from another reviewer and it was genius. I highly recommend this product.

I was very impressed at how easy it was to set and I liked the fact that you could bait it without setting it off overall a very good and well made product, & i would certainly purchase again 😀 👍👍.

Easy to use and effective
I live in a semi-rural area and have a problem with rats getting in the roof (and gnawing on electrical wiring) and under the house. Hitherto I've used bait stations, which certainly kills the rats, but they die in the roof or in the sub-floor and create a stink for a couple of weeks. After reviewing a couple of cheaper and similar design traps I settled on Tomcat — and they work a treat. I caught this specimen on the second night, adjacent to a hole where they were getting under the house.I'm happy to recommend Tomcat Rat Snap traps — a quality product that works.
