Top quality flashlight.
This is a high quality flashlight. The beam is SO much brighter than the incandescent versions of days gone by. I bought this because I knew I could count on MagLite to produce a quality product that I don't have to wonder about. There are a number of cheaper flashlights out there that claim more luminance, but long term quality is questionable, and the luminance numbers may or may not reflect their actual capability. When i received this, it was in a "display box", which is ok with me because it was so much easier to open than the blister packs. One thing to note was that there was nothing on the outside of the box to indicate the color of the flashlight inside, so at first I was not sure if I received a black one, when I ordered red. No worries, though, because it was actually red. I really like the red finish, because it is very easy to spot when I've set it down somewhere. I tried out the light as soon as I could. Indoors, it was very bright, and I could see very clearly, although it wasn't blindingly bright. Outdoors, I could easily shine a beam from my house to the trees about 150 feet away. I wish that the beam had the ability to be more concentrated, like a search light. It has some interesting modes. As the description says, it is programmable so that if you rapidly click the button two or three times when you turn it on, it can respond in different ways. You can choose from one of three different programs. the programs incorporate different features like High/Low brightness, strobing, or momentary on (as long as you hold the button). After trying them all, I found I have no need for the strobing (it's mainly for disorienting bad guys), and the momentary was cool but not necessary, so I just left it on the default setting, which is the High/Low Intensity. With this setting, the high intensity comes on with the first click, and low with the second. If you pause for any amount of time at all between the clicks though, the button works as the "off" instead of moving to the next setting. That's still not really a problem for me, though, because I usually only use the "High" setting, which is first. Low is nice when you need a little less light, but it is still fairly bright, brighter than the incandescents of the past. I do like that even though it is efficient, it still uses D-cells, so the batteries will last a long time, and no more worries about the bulb burning out! All things considered, though, it is a top-quality flashlight that will last for years, and will easily meet my needs. (I mainly need it to find stuff in my yard at night, which is about 3 acres. I can see just about anywhere from the house. I would recommend this to anyone.

Newer is Sometimes Better
I was apprehensive at purchasing this new model of MagLite. My first one, I bought was from Home Depot in 2000. I remember it came in a blister pack (something I had never seen at the time). It was in my beloved EMS blue. It was the slightly longer model at one-foot long. It was a package deal, with the mini EMS blue, MagLite and belt pouch. All for $20. I was an exception to the rule, I guess, in that I always removed the batteries when I knew I wasn't going to be using the flashlight for any length of time. Maybe this is what kept it going for so long. Maybe it was the fact that I never used this outside. It was strictly an indoor flashlight, tucked away in a temperate, spare bedroom. Whatever the reason was, it last me until three-weeks ago, when I went to grab it from a cabinet and turn it on, it did not turn on. And, after having just installed fresh D-cell batteries a month prior, I unscrewed the bottom piece and they had ruptured. I was shocked and greatly saddened (yes, saddened as I have Asperger's syndrome and these small things can be a real bummer). I couldn't even dislodge the batteries as they had fried inside the flashlight. After more than twenty-years, I pitched the flashlight and carefully reviewed the new MagLites. Well, I was pleasantly surprised at the several changes that had been made. While I was disappointed in the reduction of length as there was something unique about the length. Maybe it was because the first MagLite I ever saw was when my brother-in-law brought one from his police department and showed me. I instantly loved it. The streamlined appearance was what initially caught my attention. So, in reviewing the new MagLites, naturally, I was apprehensive. I thought, like so many other products, manufacturers "cop out" of quality after some time. Well, interestingly, I have found, so far, this MagLite, while slightly shorter than the first one I owned, is the same exterior quality. That same streamlined appearance and craftmanship is identical. Or at least, I hope it is. The one big change that I did not have with my first MagLite was the excellent quality of light. Installing fresh D-cell batteries, naturally, and I nearly blinded myself! The quality of the beam of light from this model is astounding! I never had the distance and clearness from the first one I owned. Definitely excellent value for the money and the portability is still, excellent! the intensity of the beam even when not looking at it directly (not that I needed to), the reflection of that beam is enough to make your eyes hurt. I couldn't use it in an enclosed space for too long as the rays bounce back into your eyes, making them hurt. So yes, this is an outstanding MagLite upgrade. I will probably be purchasing the 4-cell D (EMS Blue), next. A+

I love these flashlights. They are sturdy/durable. Easy to hold and use. Bright and come in multiple colors. Hint, if you need more thatn one, get different colors so you know which one is which.

Good ole MagLite
I used MagLites throughout my 35 year law-enforcement career. Always dependable and very well made. I upgraded when they introduced the rechargeable car mount model. They proved to be an extremely versatile “tool”, and durable over years of rough use. Wish the strobe feature was available back then, it would have been useful at times. The strength of the beam is adequate but not as bright as the rechargeable models.
